    0000 Buckshot?

Would a 3", 12-gauge carry 9 pellets of these "oversized" pills? Would you use a "buffer" to prevent shot deformation?

    Thoughts? Opinions?

    .38 x 2 = .76

Assuming a 0000 pellet is .38in diameter as I just read, that would mean two pellets side by side would exceed bore diameter, right? If they don't stack side by side, of course you could stagger them one just a bit above the lower until you fill the shotcup and then crimp. I'd think they would have considerable setback on firing and a lot of flattening if loaded that way. Who knows though. Maybe the right buffer could minimize damage and give decent patterns. To be honest, I never even heard of 0000 buck before you brought it up.

It is the largest size of buckshot extant. (.38" dia.). These would require a "helical" stack with a powdered styrofoam buffer to avoid deformation. About 8-9 pellets of 0000 Buckshot would create a horrific wound channel at 3 yards.

ALL shot loads produce a horrific wound at 3 yards(9 feet)!

True .38" Buckshot will create larger wound channels with fewer pellets. If the tin/antimony/arsenic content is low, the shot will tend to deform upon impacting bone.

There are a lot of different factors that will alter how larger pellets will affect the outcome of an antipersonnel encounter.

I cast .375” RBs and have loaded them in 2-3/4” shells. I can get 7 in, but they don’t stack well. I never used buffer, but it’s a good idea.

I personally find #1 Buck is the ideal size for 12-ga. Four will sit in a level inside a shot cup, and I can easily get 12 in a 2-3/4” hull at 1100 fps. Low recoil and tight patterns. Ballistic Gel testing shows #1Buck to 00Buck at 1100-1200 fps penetrate right at 16”, so full penetration with excessive penetration.

Bubba Roundtree Outdoors has a video on YouTube loading quad 0 buckshot. He has lots of buckshot videos.

Watched some of his video. I wanted to see how that would have grouped at 21 feet instead of 150 feet.

    Captain 0,

I have an opinion on most things and would like to help. What is your intended application for 0000 Buck? Hunting, home defense, anti-aircraft (drones), or what? LOL.

    Be well.

They hunt deer with dogs in South Carolina. He makes lots of buckshot. I assume they seldom get within 7 yards of an uninjured deer. There’s lots of hunting videos on his channel too.

I don’t think they practice at indoor ranges there.

I made my own mold that throws .375 dia balls. Use soft lead (stick on WW) and they will go through a full choke. I place two at a time over a double end seal then two more going the other way and so forth until I have 8 in there. I add cornmeal as buffer and a over card. It is a stout load and it is devastating. I get all 8 balls inside a 19" circle at 40 yards. Winchester model 1200

I’ve seen several of his. I think the reason I have to go down to #1Buck is because I’m using a shotcup (WAA12F114), while he loads his the traditional way with cards and felt wads. The fingers which ride between the bore and the Buckshot take up around .012” on each side, IIRC (don’t hold me to it, it’s been 5-10 years since ai loaded any).
