    List of cross purpose dies?

Well, my Google skills did not show me anything so I figured I would ask the hive mind.

Is there a list or chart somewhere that shows what dies can be be used for things other then what they are marked for?

    Here are some sample questions.
Can I use a 303 brit seating die for 7.7 Jap?
Can I use a 38 super resizing die for 9mm Largo?

I do not need any immediate info, I was just thinking about it and wondered what I could load for in a desperate situation.

This is really just for informational purposes.

    Thanks for any help

    On my bench......
    8x57 neck die with a 308 expander decapping pin for 7.7×58 . I have a .3165 groove and use a .318 dia cast same as the 7.92×57 J .
308 sizer for a 30-30 and 30 Rem neck die.
256 Winchester mag as a step die between 223&222 .
6.5-257 AI as a neck die for 257 Roberts and 25-06 with the 257 expander decapping pin.
458 WM as a body die for 264 WM it would probably work for most of the WM and RM and 450 Marlin.
I have used 45 ACP for S&W and Colts .
    308 FDC for 30-30 and 30 Rem .
I would expect 7-08 size , seat , and FCDs to work on 7-30 Waters.
I would expect any AI to be a neck/base die for any parent case .

30&32 Rem can be used for 30-30 and 32 WS but didn't touch the shoulder .
30-30 and 32 WS can be used for 30&32 Rem but if use correctly to full length mess up the shoulder as the Rem shoulder is best described as a Weatherby Shaped Win AI .

458 WM expander works for 45-70.

30-30 M die also for 30-06 (with a spacer), 32 WS M die also used for 7.62 x 39 (with a spacer) (European 0.311 version). 454 acp dies also used for 455 Webley (with a Webley 455 shell holder).

I've used a .223 die to resize .380 brass. Dead on to spec.

I was going to suggest resizing 380 automatic in a 223 die, but Mr Urquell beat me to it.

There is some useful information in the Handloader's Manual of Cartridge Conversions by John Donnelly.

A chart would be very useful. I wonder why one has not been done? You can find the information but one chart would be great.

There are something like 109 cartridges with arms in production right now for them there are probably 40-50 more that are of sufficient demand that ammo runs for them regularly and the 40-50 more that skip yrs then run a huge run . In the first 40-50 reside things like 257 Robert's and 7×57 . The second 40-50 include like 22 WRF ,307 and 356 Win .

Then there's the whole deal with modern obsolete cartridges like the 25,30,&32 Rem, and honestly I haven't seen seen a box of 325 WSM in 10+ yr . That doesn't mean it's not available just not where I've been shopping. That doesn't even start to count dozens of really close but not cartridges and many once and still popular wildcats like the 7 versions of the 25-06' and 22-250. The 7×64 Brenkke and 280 Rem are stupid close except the Brenkke adopted the early Mauser shoulder where the 280 went with the 06' shoulder .

How would you break down a spread sheet ? Caliber, closest case , rimmed/rimless, ........... just the 221/222/223 has been necked down to 17 & up to 35/9mm . The 308 and 300 Savage are common in almost every stop from 22-45 cal . I can name ×55,57&58 in 8 calibers . 9mm and US 38s I can count 15 just designated as pistols and only 2 of those aren't in production someplace that doesn't count the extra names for 38 Short and 9×17 . Even the 284 Win is popular in 6.5 , 7mm and 30 cal nevermind Alexander Arms blowing it out to a rebated rim 45-70 . There are belted mags from 22-458 and the 416 Rem and rimless H&H cases go from under 2" to 3.5"+ in 22-50 cal and I think they hit every single one in SAE and metric . As ridiculous as it sounds even 50 BMG has been worked over from the 22 loudenboomerearcansplitter to the 12 ga FH .
There's probably 50 cartridges on the 45 Basic starting at 45-120 and cutting it back to 1.8" in .375-.458 calibers .

Lyman 310 dies are some of the most versatile, as long as you don't need full length sizing.

    Also some of the slowest.

    Good thread.
Amongst other things, I have loaded 7.62x54 for a Finnish m28 by neck sizing and seating bullets using .32 H&R dies.
I decapped them first with a Lee punch and base.
I’ve also loaded .303 British and 7.7 Japanese with 7.65 Argentine dies.

    Along these lines -

Let’s say I have half a box of 38 Super brass, and want to “reload” it. 38 Super is a straight case with a diameter of .384”. The closest dies I can find to resize the brass would be 38/357, which is .379” outside diameter amd a straight case. Think this would work, or is the .005” too much difference?

    Well, this will be interesting!
I'm thinking charts and text, broken down by caliber, and ever other page will read "Experimental! Use at your own risk!" Lol
