    M14 diopter

    Hello to all.
I have a M14 but I don't know how much a click in elevation of the diopter is worth. Can anyone help me?
    Thanks in Advance.
    Ciao

Is it a standard sight or National Match? Is there a hood on the rear sight? On a standard sight M14 sight, its 1" at 100 meters, 2" at 200 meters, etc. The hooded national match sight is 1/2. The M1 Garand is calibrated for yards, the M14 is Meters. It's important to know that, because they will fit on either rifle.

The pinions often get mismatched but an M-14 elevation pinion will have an M stamped on the elevation scale. The rear sights of a Garand and an M-14 are identical and while not "correct" you can even use WWII lockbar sights on it.

The M1/M14 rear sights move up or down one MOA per click. The National Match rear sight also moves one MOA per click, but the hooded aperture is eccentric, and has a notch cut in it. The aperture rotates, and the notch indicates 1/2 MOA up or down.

If the notch is down and you wish to raise the elevation 1-1/2 MOA, turn the knob to raise the sight one MOA, the rotate the hooded aperture until the notch is up (it clicks).

If the notch is up and you wish to raise the elevation 1-1/2 MOA, turn the knob to raise the sight two MOA, the rotate the hooded aperture until the notch is down.

Thanks for explaining this. I've often wondered how they got finer adjustment. My guess was way off, I figured it was a change of threading.

On the use of the word "diopter," I know it is a translation but there is another aspect to the usage. There is in fact a 1/2-diopter insert for the hooded National Match sight. It fits inside the hooded aperture and is retained by a rubber O-ring. It helps some shooters focus on the front sight.

What's a source(s) for M1/M1A NM diopter? Searched but could not find - only found sights/parts.
It ain't rocket science, it's boolit science.

All the usual places, GB, 'Bay, M14forum, Swappin and Selling here, and the CMP forums are all good places to check. They're easy to pick out, they've got the hood on the rear sight.

Sundog is looking for the diopter (magnifier), not the sight itself. I'll see if I can find one for sale; may take a day or two.

Tatume, thanks for pointing that out. I was not aware such a beast existed. Would you mind posting pictures of yours?

I have used the BJ Jones lens insert, but unfortunately he has apparently retired and his website is closed. There are other similar products. I hope the links below are helpful:

Tatume has it right for elevation.

For windage-- the standard sight has one minute adjustment, the NM has half minute adjustment. The change is as you guessed by the thread pitch. IIRC the standard sight windage is 32 tpi, the NM 64 tpi. It has been a few decades since I measured the thread pitch on a NM sight, so take that for what its worth.
