For me cast is for .35 caliber or bigger, others get jacketed. I would say in the the big bores little to no advantage to jacketed for most game in the US. Had not shot any jacketed loads in my 45-70's in many years. This past deer season I loaded up a few 300 JHP to 2000fps like I did decades ago. Shot a nice 10 point buck with that load and it did not perform any better than my normal deer load of the Lyman/Gould 330HP cast soft loaded to 1450fps. The recoil was a lot worse though.

I worked up loads in my 336 with 180 grain hot cores. I did ladder testing with probably five different types of powder. Best group I got was just a hair under an inch at 100 yards. Most were 1.25” to 1.5” plus. If you look at my avatar it’s with a 200 grain hollow point I casted myself from a group buy here. It’ll shoot three in a hole that looks like one big hole at 100 yards and still shoot MOA at 200 yards. My load is with 40 grains of varget. Chronograph says it’s averaging 2100 ft./s. I’ve shot deer with the 200 grain cast HP and it slams deer to the ground like a lightning bolt hit them and never flinch or move after the shot. I’ve shot several deer with the 180 grain hots core going a few hundred ft. per second faster and none of them have hit the ground instantly. Normally a few steps to 20 to 40 yards before they drop. In my opinion, if you can find a cast bullet that you can make accurate I think they work better than any jacketed in my 35 Rem for deer. Imo the big HP I use with 10.5 BH alloy is the key for dropping them quick. Maybe I just get lucky with my Cast hollow points who knows. I think the key is to get a nice accurate load at the 2100 fps threshold for quick dispatching. I’ve shot quite a few deer with too hard alloy at 1750 ft./s using my 44 mag rifle and if I don’t hit backbone, they normally travel 100 to 125 yards before dropping. They also look like the Boolits didn’t expand. I’ve done some posts here on my experiences if you check past posts from a few years back. The 35 Rem is my favorite for Cast boolit hunting deer that for sure.

Here’s some of my old posts you can do some reading and form your own opinions
