    #9 shot in a J-frame snubby

i loaded some snake loads, 38 spec, 2.5 gr American Select, fiber wad, 1.4 cc shot and an inverted gas check.. At 10 feet it was a good pattern, apx 6" in diameter. Very quiet but the target was stapled to 1/2" black insulation board. Shot bounced back and hit me in the belly. Didn't hurt and didn't even stain my white tee shirt. More powder!!

    Try 4 grains and a Kevlar t-shirt.

I knew a guy that was shooting a side match at a SASS event 3/8" plywood target and very weak 125gn 38spl loads. At the buzzer "bam, bam" two shots from the derringer and waiting for the RO's commands.... Oh, he's rolling around on the ground holding onto the family jewel that just got hit by the 125 gn bullet that bounced back, maybe we need a different target...

A paper plate on the ground works well.
To test shot loads that is.

    James,

Be sure to ALWAYS wear eye protection when shooting shot loads in a handgun. A few years ago at my club a fellow shot snake shot loads at a target at 12 feet. The shot bounced back from the hard backboard and blinded him in his right eye!!! Wear eye protection when shooting.

    Be well.

    Adam
