Cleaning Herters Powder measure tubes

Greetings: I have a Herters shot/powder measure, and a Model 40 measure. A weird layer of white powder, looking like a mold or white graphite-like texture has shown up one of the tubes.

What do folks clean these tubes with, that won't eat the plastic? Most of them discolor over time, but mine is completely covered.

I kinda like the way an empty Herter's tube sounds when dropped, so I'll stick with the originals. So there's that. Besides, being Herters, its the best ever invented. Ask a machinist friend, etc..

Just guessing here but I wonder if you removed the tube then give it a good scrubbing with a small bristle brush and Dawn dish soap perhaps that might remove the film. If not you could perhaps add a small abrasive like Bon Ami and you could progress to a more aggressive cleaner such as. Bar Tenders Friend. You can find replacement tube material on Amazon and fleabay but if possible to save the original tube would be the best as the built in baffle that most of those tubes have is an excellent feature.

Maybe polishing using a pad on a stick or a bottle brush wrapped with cloth and some of that plastic headlight restore polish?

Nylon bore brush and push by hand on a short pistol rod.

That's a great idea-the stuff actually works on headlights.

I don't know what these are made of but in my other adventures with old materials that want to turn white i clean and dry then use 303 aerospace protectant, "303 is a premium surface treatment that provides superior protection against harmful UV rays that can cause loss of mechanical properties such as: discoloration, fading, embrittlement, cracking and/or chalking. Treated surfaces repel dirt, soiling, staining, water spots, salt water and mildew."

Plastic tool handles in my basement get a white coating over time. It seems to come off easily. I haven't tried it, but I think silver or chrome polish would work fine without removing too much material.

Have an original still in the shipping tube. Picked it up at an estate sale.
