I remember one ol vet in France saying that they had strict orders not to shoot farmers cows. The way out was the sentry would yell, "who goes there"-bang and then tell one of the guys who woke up "go wake up cookie". I also read that in a couple of memory books of vets. I think Ernie Pyle had a cartoon to that effect also.

I don't think I could pick my "favorite" as I enjoy them all. A real nice 1868 Springfield 50-70 was my first and I've added many since then. My most recent preference is for Argentine Mausers 1891 and 1909. I am fascinated by early cartridge firearms from the civil war forward. The 1866 Chassepot "needle rifle" is certainly an anomaly of that era. It is often referred to as the first modern bolt action rifle, but it fired a silk wrapped paper cartridge when everyone else was experimenting with metalic cartridges. French industry was good at producing firearms, but had no metalic cartridge infrastructure. They had plenty of women and children to make the paper cartridges so I guess in a time of conflict it made sense. In 1873 the Chassepot was replaced by the Gras with an 11mm metalic center fire cartridge. Most Chassepot's were upgraded to the Gras system so I feel fortunate to have a serviceable Chasspot still in the needle fire configuration. It is a hoot to shoot, and the rubber obturator bolt works perfectly there is no gas blow-by.

Mine is a Garand. I'd rather have a M21 (or NM M1A). Next to that an M1 Carbine.

It would be easier to pick a favorite kid!

That being said I really like my Swedish Mauser.

My favorite is a 1929 Persian mauser. It is extremely well made and it is in like new condition. The bluing is deep and perfect, the unblued parts are polished, the stock is beautiful, and the fit and finish are amazing.

It looks like a fine custom piece from an excellent gun maker, not a military piece.

My favourite is a plain-Jane US 30 Calibre M1 carbine (Quality Hardware) to shoot. To own?, it's a PB Beretta, made in Roma, Italy, .30-'06 Garand. I was in a shop "at the right time" -- mid 1980's -- when the shop owner, who had brought this firearm back from across the pond for a friend, had just gone "over the edge" vis excuses and the like from said friend not coming up with $$$ to execute purchase. I simply made inquiry, and got the whole story, followed by my hearing his being tempted to sell. "How much?" I asked. A very wonderful gentleman -- it was offered to me at exact price "friend" was to pay... and it followed me home. 100% Beretta... it is, indeed, my favourite to own.

I like them all, but I think my favorite is the 03 Springfield. I have 3 of them,, Remington, Springfield,
and a Springfield mark 1. I'm going on 82 years old but I can still see those sights real good. Can hit
8" steel plates at 200 yds all day long off the bench with cast bullets. My dad carried one in WW1.

With so much stuff to choose from,...it seems an impossible task. But if I could get my hands on a SNIPEX T-Rex,...I'd be a happy man. Sore and abused, but happy.

The 14.5mm round is an anti-aircraft round the Russians developed eons ago and makes the .50BMG look like a puny runt. The new world record for the longest sniper kill was recorded in Ukraine last year by Ukrainian veteran using this round in a bolt-action version of the T-Rex, called a Monomach. SNIPEX is the Ukrainian company that makes these.

When I was in college at Chico State, I met a WWII vet while fishing the Sacramento River. He said he had been in the engineers, but mostly built prison compounds for the Waffen SS soldiers that had been captured. One day he took his M1 and a jeep to go deer hunting in the nearby woods. After he had bagged three, he delivered them to a local German family as a gift. The Oldest man of the family had tears in his eyes, and kept saying "Danke, Danke! "That man was no enemy of mine," he said.

Thanks for the explanation, it just didn't look quite right to be a .50 BMG, although the one I created is almost as large, but being a single shot, it lacks the box magazine.
