Dang it, dang it, dang it!

I've been messing around with a game camera my wife bought. I moved it to my lower field last night and started mowing a path where animals wouldn't be blocked by the tall grass. While I was at it I started mowing pathways for me to walk when hunting armadillos down there. It's ~ 1/4 mile from my house.

Came around a cedar tree and a copperhead slithered across in front of me right into the edge of a wooded area. I couldn't get on top of him with the mower due to trees. I didn't have the derringer and was kicking myself. Perfect opportunity to test the #12 shot loads. I drove up and grabbed the derringer but it was gone when I got back down there. Dang it!

I would have considered sending a few rounds at it from the everyday carry. Already have hearing protection on using the mower...

Had I had anything I would have fired it at him. I was even looking around for a big rock. Last time this happened I parked my tractor on top of the snake and got a shovel. Sucker was striking my tire like crazy. Luckily I have tough tires. I couldn't get close enough to repeat this.

I drove back down in the field tonight to put my memory card back in the game camera. Took the derringer with #12 shot hoping to see the copperhead. No copperhead but I did see this black snake. He climbed the little tree in 2 seconds. I did not shoot him since they do so much good for rodent control.

I thought of this thread last evening.
My wife, daughter, and grandson found a paper nest full of black wasps in a small tree by the pond. They had passed within a couple of feet from it while riding around in the Mule.
The nest was about the size of my outstretched hand.
Alone, I went down there and obliterated them with one 12 gauge AA #8 shell at ten feet. The Winchester 37A/ full choke shotgun does not dally about!
    I only saw ONE survivor

I would bet a .38 or .45 load of #12 would have taken it down as well

I found this nice gelatin capsule size chart today. I knew there were bigger veterinary sized capsules. Sadly the smallest (big) ones are .60"

Smoked a carpenter bee at about 6ft with rice out of the 38 spl. Took one wing and seen a hit on its abdomen or what ever the back section is called. No penetration on that so it may have shocked it mostly. The 10.5 brooks shoe finished it. One shot one kill.

Good to hear it. You may need to increase powder charge if taking longer shots.

The thread about the aggressive deer got me messing with rubber bullets. I cut some out of horse stall mat using my .38spl case sharpened on the drillpress with a file. The bullets can be longer or shorter depending on where you cut them from on the mat texture. I first cut a short one(the primer only flat tipped one) but cut subsequent ones from the thicker part of the mat.

I loaded them in 9mm cases that had the waist I formed doing gelatin capsule loads. I just twisted them in by hand. Short one below

Tapered the long ones on the grinder

    Load with primer only:

    0.5gr flake shotgun powder
out of Fed 12ga shells(probably unique)

    0.7gr

    1.0gr

Man the .7-1.0gr ones are humming and would probably kill a small animal. Still haven't tested for accuracy. That will be upcoming.

If I did this in .38 I would swage the case mouth down using the .380 seater die just like I did the 9mm cases.

    Here's the 1.0gr load shooting a 2L bottle:

    And the penetration:

Messing around with ideas for more case volume in the 9mm and came up with this. The .355 BossMighty. 3 stacked capsules will take down the toughest jurassic-level insects around.

What about loading the 45 to 9mm adapter as a cartridge? Flare the 9mm brass for a good push fit in the adapter. Then fill the adapter with rice on top of the charged brass with egg carton or card wad.

I may have to build some with the South American 3” 410 hulls from Astra I just got. It would be one way to burn up a few of the unknown primers so the hulls could be used for more serious loads.
What powder is appropriate for light projectile 410 loads? 110/296 is off the table. 2400? Or even faster than usual 410 powders?

That's a really good idea. It'd be like loading a muzzleloader everytime though.

I'm not sure on the .410 powder since I've never loaded any.

I'm doing 410 but not as many as large rifle primers are still more than I want to spend for random blasting. I'm using some of the magtech brass. Contemplating getting some of the 20ga for more rice volume.

.410 has pretty good case volume. Heck .38 has plenty. 20ga would be insane lol so of course it must be done.

I wish I had .38 case volume out of my 9mm. I've been eyeballing .38 aluminum framed 5-shot snubbies but know I really don't need one.

A huge Thank You Sir! to Barry54. He sent me some .454 Casull(small primer pockets) and .444 Marlin brass to play with. Some of the .444 is 3/8" longer than the one in the pic. Man oh man my face lit up with that big ol .444 slipped right down in the chambers of my derringer!

This is gonna be fun. I just don't know where to start but a huge load of rice out of the .444 brass looks like the start of it. Buckshot, mega-load of lead shot. Boy oh boy here we go.

    ADC Mod4 posed with L-->R: .444, .454 Casull, .45LC, 9mm

I'm not sure what he was forming them into. The longer ones were started and cracked so the shoulder isn't pushed back very far.

A friend of mine bought a 35 Remington Contender barrel and it turned out to be chambered for 358 JD Jones. Being a tightwad, I purchased a set of Lee dies and there was a burr inside I didn’t notice until I ruined way too many pieces of brass. Midway accepted the defective return and I got a refund. Called up SSK industries and got the proper dies and load data at the same time. The “ruined” 444 brass has been lingering since I hate to throw anything away that might be useful later. I am a deluxe procrastinator and my spring cleaning efforts (in June) and this thread came together. The lightbulb went off and they are useful now!
