Matts 500 gr .458 load data

    Hi,

I was always interested in these bullets but never had a starting load point.

I reached out to them and asked for starting load data but was told there are a lot of people using them, so the data is out there.

As of yet, I haven't found any.

Im not looking for high level loads.

I know Chris Costas runs a 500 gr load at 1350 ish, Im not looking for that fast, more in the 1150 ish

I was hoping to use h4198.

I was hoping someone with quick load data or actual data might have some suggestions.

Below is the data on the bullet

    https://www.mattsbullets.com/500-Gra...458_p_128.html

This bullet is 1.242 inches long and .400 from the crimp groove to the nose. It was designed to function in a lever action.

These are not standard 500 gr bullets so sending standard load data for regular 500 gr bullets I dont think would work as a starting load

    Thanks in advance

I ran the numbers through Quickload and this is what it spit out.
Remember this is not load data, just a computer's guess as to what will happen when you pull the trigger
    45-70, 500gn Lead 1.242" , 2.505" COAL
H4198 -26 grains should give 1150fps(20" barrel) with a pressure of 17kpsi and a load density of 68%
    H4198 - 31 grains should give 1350fps(20" barrel) with a pressure of 26kpsi and a load density of 81%
Be sure to compare to published load data.
I looked at Hodgdon's site, but didn't see H4198 listed for trapdoor or lever action rifles...

Much thanks on that. I think that’s one of the biggest problems is that there’s not published load data for this particular bullet and even when I call the place they don’t have any.

I think just to be safe I’m probably gonna start it 24 grains, and just test it out

But the biggest thing I was looking for, was at least the starting point and then I can work on it and check with pressure signs

From what the company says they sell a lot of these bullets that’s why I was hoping somebody on here had actually loaded them

I load my 500's at Trapdoor loads. I like the IMR 3031 at 40.5-41 grains and gives me between 1,200-1,300 speeds.

Is this seated to 2.55 for a lever gun? If so that gives me a data point if I can find some 3031
