    Shelling corn for freezing

How do you shell sweet corn? Do you use a machine, or fixture, or just slice it off with a sharp knife?

I use a sharp knife - or - you can blanch the shucked ears for a few seconds in boiling water then chill and freeze.

My memory of grandma canning corn: electric carving knife swiped down the cob end to end multiple times. After blanching.

Blanch the corn on the cob. cut the corn kernels off and don't get too close to the cob. I use an old hickory butcher knife and use the back of the knife blade to scrap the cob we call that milking the cob

One can use a knife to skin the kernels off, but here not long ago I saw a neat little tool on Al Gore's Invention that looked like a bean can with both ends cut out that the operator placed over the ear, stroked the contraption down and instant naked cob.
Rights, and Privileges, are not synonymous. We have the Right to Bear Arms. As soon as the Government mandates firearm registration, and permiting, then that Right becomes a Privilege, and may be taken away at our Master's discretion.

The problem with that is that if it doesn't expand and contract to fit the ear a lot is missing.

Over the years I’ve tried a lot of the gadgets to cut corn.A knife works as good as any thing.

We always shucked it, then a quick 2min dip in boiling water, then used an electric knife to remove the kernels. The we'd put it 1.5 cups at a time in zip-lok freezer bags. You can adjust the quantity for larger/small families...this was for a family of 3. The quick boil killed off the majority of bacteria and natural yeast on the corn.

Home Depot has a modern version of the one my grandparents used. Theirs was made of wood with a metal blade. They cut a lot of corn that way.

10" chefs knife, use the back to scrape the cobs to get the "milk" for a creamy style corn.

I have tried all kinds of gadgets and just go back to the knife, it is easiest! Want a VERY sharp knife or your arm/wrist will suffer.

Have one of those in the back of the junk drawer. I won't even give it away other than for scrap metal. Thing makes a huge mess of spraying corn.

I use a knife and a bundt pan. Set the cob over the top and let the kernels fall wherever.

I’ve cut trainloads of corn off the cobb over the years. Found this gadget last year that is the quickest and most efficient method I’ve ever tried. Chuck it in electric drill and go!

If you are removing the kernels before cooking, I saw a video yesterday where they split the cob length ways and just peeled the kernels off the cob. Sorry, but with old age creeping in at a faster rate, I don't remember how they split the cob. It might work on cooked corn also, but you might crush a lot of the kernels.

I don't fully cook it but just blanch it. Hot water bath for 3 minutes or so.

I just use a big sharp knife.

We never cut it then froze it, but did cut it and can it. Yes, run the back of knife to Milk it, you'll get better after you bite a few pieces of cob.
