Hi guys. I'm in the process of rust bluing my old Ithaca Model 37. It's coming along nicely, I'll post pictures when I'm done.
I realize it's a minor thing, but I would like to repaint the red band on the safety. What paint will best adhere to steel, plus withstand oil/lubricants? Model airplane enamel? Rustoleum/Krylon type spray?
Anyone "been there and done that?"
I have used Testor's Model Enamel, don't know if it's the best, but it has worked for me.
Comes in little dinky bottles too.
Nail polish works well and comes in a variety of colors - but I have also used Testor's in the past and it's a good product.
Nail polish comes with a brush in the cap, makes life easy. And you've a zillion or two choices in color.
I use nail polish to put details on some of my wood turnings. Works great.
The plus side to nail polish is you may be able to steal it from your wife.
Just don't get caught.
Of course, you may be using it yourself, never mind, let's not go there.
I have used the markers sold to welders and steel merchants. Comes in a few colors. You take the cap off and push the felt tip to get it flowing. Used it on the minimal front sight of a Ruger LCP and painted the rear sight with the white version.

The solid soft lead bullet is undoubtably the best and most satisfactory expanding bullet that has ever been designed. It invariably mushrooms perfectly, and never breaks up. With the metal base that is essential for velocities of 2000 f.s. and upwards to protect the naked base, these metal-based soft lead bullets are splendid.

Forget everything you know about loading jacketed bullets. This is a whole new ball game!
Ill give a different idea. Heat shrink insulation. It comes in basic colors a small ring that just fits around saftey cut to the right width then slide over and heat it should shrink into the groove nice and tight.
In addition, if you're lucky, it will hinder movement and keep the safety in the fire position. You could probably push it to the trigger-block position, but it may be less likely to happen inadvertently.Originally Posted by country gent

I ended up using Rustoleum Engine enamel. It is listed as heat, chemical, and oil resistant. I guess we'll find out.
