30-30 Winchester Load Data for Universal

I've got 8lbs of Maxim CSB-1 that uses Hodgdon Universal load data as a starting point.

I can't seem to find any Universal load data for lead in a 30-30 WCF. I would assume it should work given its similarity to unique.

The boolits ill be trying in a 336 Marlin micro groove are an NOE 311-184-FN-GC and an Arsenal 311-170-RF-GC.

Any one have any load data for Universal in a 30-30 for around a 170 gr boolit.

    Thanks

For the micro groove rifles I have fond that very hard cast sized to the actual groove diameter will hold to the smallish micro groove barrel 's lands at 1,700 to 2,000 fps. Using 10-12 grains of Unique with 150, 165 and 180s you can achieve the 1,700 mark, just find a comparable velocity load for Universal and work the scale up and down for best accuracy. But you do need to slug your barrel first off, to get the exact diameter for the grooves for that barrel.
Watch the holes in your paper, if slightly off round, your bullets may not be hard enough for holding to the lands.

For my Marlin 30-30's, mostly MicroGroove, I simply start with .310 and/or .311 bullet, checking for function/smooth chambering and accuracy. I use Universal powder, 8-10 grains with plain base 170 gr bullets for light recoil shooting 100 yards and less. I try to stay away from really hard bullets, BULLET FIT, in the chamber throat, usually makes the difference in good vs poor accuracy and prevents/reduces leading. Universal will limit your max velocities, useful for everyday casual or fun shooting, but for 'full' velocity loads you may want a slower powder - 2015, H335, 2495, H4895, Leverevolution, 3031, Varget, 2460....

Thanks. So sounds like starting around 8 grains and working up should work. I've got a chronograph to keep and eye on things while developing. I do all the other stuff suggested as routine in developing loads.

Not looking for full power loads hear as I have better powders for that. Looking for what shoots best in 1,100-1,500 range.

I did a Quickload run for the Noe. I did wild guesses for COAL and barrel length.

And just curious as to where you got this powder.

    Code:
    Cartridge : .30-30 Win. (SAAMI)
    Bullet : ?? .310, 185, 311-184-FN GC J5
    Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 2.550 inch = 64.77 mm
    Barrel Length : 20.0 inch = 508.0 mm
    Powder : Maxam CSB 1

CAUTION: Figures exceed maximum and minimum recommended loads !

FYI, Quickload says that 12 gr Unique is approaching or exceeding max pressure under any bullet over 150 gr depending on seating depth. I would recommend not going over 11 gr for the heavier bullets unless you have pressure tested data for your exact bullet you are using.

It also says that you can get 1700 fps with unique under a Lee 150 at Ok pressures, but 1700 fps requires excessive pressures for the heavier stuff.

Several years ago this was being sold in bulk. It's a Maxam shotgun powder used a lot by Rio. It's a good quality powder and was being used a lot in target pistol loads for 357, 38 special, 45 ACP, etc.

About two years ago one of my shooting buddies was thinning out some supplies. He had three 8lb jugs and I bought one for $100. Works great in plinker loads for my 38 and 44 special cast loads.
