Remington Model 17 Help

My brother has had the Mod 17 for quite sometime, minus it never had a barrel. I just found a bbl for it last week. We then installed the bbl and took it outside to fire it. However the bbl is not related to the problem that we experienced.

The problem is the bolt is not locking up when in battery. Loaded or not you can shuck the the forstock at any time, in this case the the forstock release button on the trigger guard serves no purpose.

Since this 20 gage was made between 1921-1933, I'm wondering if back during that era, the bolt lockup mechanism has been modified to allow rapid fire by holding the trigger back and then constantly working the slide.

We fired it a few times and it did ok, but I don't like the fact ,I'm afraid it could be fire while out of batery.

Regardless, what can be done to fix this battery lockup issue? TIA

Action bar lock is probably worn. There's a couple on eBay currently. A Model 17 will fire every time you close the bolt if you hold the trigger back.

My wife’s Remington model 17 20 gauge will not slam fire.
I’ve had Ithaca 37s that would and 37s that wouldn’t.
And Winchester 97s and 12s that would.
Will the bolt lock up correctly with the barrel off?

Thank you for the input. I'll probably buy that Action Bar lock that you mentioned. I haven't a clue how the action/receiver works. Just bought the BBL last week. The bore looks new.

I have the Ithica Model 37 Feather Weight, my dad bought it new. I think he said it cost $75. He told me that he was so afraid that he wouldn't ever be able to pay it off. Love that thing.

At one point Ithaca incorporated a disconnector into the M37 that would prevent slam firing. I'm not certain when.

My Ithaca WILL slam fire, that's for sure.

I discovered this the hard way ... be careful .
My model 17 's action has always locked (if you don't hold the trigger back) back after firing a round ... requiring the release on the trigger guard to be pressed .

Check out the action bar locking mecanism ... it may need replacement.

The Model 17 Remington is my most favorite shotgun ... I love to hunt with it .
My grandfather bought it in 1928 and hunted with (Quail ) with it his whole life .
My Dad passed it on to me when I was in high school .

The only Ithaca M37's that won't slam fire were made after 1975. And what happens with them is the Hammer follows the bolt down if the trigger is held back. On the earlier ones the hammer is still cocked and then is released to fire the round as soon as the bolt is all the way down. That is Slam Firing.

On the later guns if you run the slide with the trigger trapped, the hammer follows the bolt down and the gun has the be cycled again with the trigger not trapped in order to fire it again.
