    270 WSM Brass

    Hi Everyone,

So a friend of mine has a model 70 Win in 270 WSM. He hasn't been able to find any ammo for it, and brass isn't any easier. I did find some 300 WSM brass, thinking about going with that and sizing it down. Anybody done it, or thoughts? Initially I told him it might be easier to rebarrel to another caliber, hahaha. Thanks in advance for any input.

I believe that it can be done. I have a client that got both of his sons 270wsm rifles years ago, he claims that he makes the brass from 300 WSM brass but has to clean up the necks. I would think sizing a single piece in your 270 wsm dies would tell the tale.

Should be doable. I built a 6mm-300WSM that has never seen a piece of .300 brass, all .270 (one less step in necking down).

IIRC the 7mmWSM has the shoulder farther forward, similar to the .280 Remington vs .270 and the rest of the '06 family of cartridges.

I was shown a custom rifle the other day that used 7mm wsm brass. It didn't have the customary headstamp on it. It is out there under a different name. I hope it comes to me

Thanks for the input guys. Have some brass on the way, we'll see how it goes.

Sometimes going from a larger to a smaller case will have the brass 'flow' into the neck and increase the wall thickness.
Measure inside & outside the neck when you're done. You may need to turn down the wall thickness of the case neck.

Neck turning is no big deal, having the wall thickness too thick can have issues with chambering and/or bullet release
causing a pressure spike. You might want to read up on brass conversions and check into whether it'll
also need to be annealed, and maybe trimmed. It's a straight forward process, and easy to read up on.

Going up or down with necks and case length from a 'parent' cartridge is how about half the common
cases we've come to know and love started out.
For what you're doing- the 25-06, and .270Win. that came from the .30-06 is a good example.

Just be careful and knowledgeable about what you're doing.

    Should be no issue.
When I make 7-08 brass from 308 brass, I do turn the necks to about .013" thick. You'll need a ball/blade mic to get a good measurement. Too thick of necks and you'll have high pressure issues.

Are you thinking of the 6.8 Western? Which Might be an option for OP.

I have 5 nickle plated 270 WSM and 9 300 WSM that I will send you, if that will help. It is stray range pick up brass. I am responsible for emptying the brass bucket at our range and I sort through for anything that might be useful to someone. I usually trade, but this is so little. Postage would be nice, but it's yours if you want it. Bill
