Found the CMP paperwork for my dad's Garand. No idea what it means.

Found a small manila envelope with a certificate, receipt, and a Brownell's "Match" front sight in the original bag.

I know folks told me that this was likely a Service grade rifle, which is a step above a Rack grade rifle. No idea what grade this is since it just says Special...

Usually meant it to be manufacturer aligned parts and bottom end of muzzle and throat inspection.

I believe the "special" rifles were reconditioned with new aftermarket barrels and wood. Does it have a very nice "CMP" cartouche on the stock? If so it is one of the reconditioned rifles. If so, it should be a very good shooter.

I've had 6 M1's over the years all have been a blast to shoot.

The "special" was a step up from the "service" grade. They had either new barrels or gi barrels that showed very little wear and they either had new production stocks or gi stocks that showed very little wear/ handling marks or a combination of that. They didn't start trying to match parts for manufacturers much unless you went up to the "collectors" grade.

Regardless of what grade it is, you have one very beautiful rifle there. It's all in the color. .06 or .308?

And it has provenance within the family!
Got a .22 .30 .32 .357 .38 .40 .41 .44 .45 .480 or .500 S&W cylinder that needs throats honed? 9mm, 10mm/40S&W, 45 ACP pistol barrel that won't "plunk" your handloads? 480 Ruger or 475 Linebaugh cylinder that needs the "step" reamed to 6° 30min chamfer? Mine did also. It also came with a new leather (match type) sling. Mine is unfired since receiving it from the CMP. Gerald "Hook" Boutin worked his Magic on it (still within CMP competition specs). I have other Garands that I used in CMP competition.

Special is its own grade with a new stock and barrel. Service uses an old stock.
