Help with S&W pricing for a family member

So my mom has been offered a S&W 18-4 22lr as payment for part of a debt she is owed. She asked me and I cant seem to get a clear price range for one. He wants 500 off of debt for it. It is a pre 1983 (I think) xxxkxxx sn#.
Thoughts. Any info will help. Just dont want her to get taken and be able to easily recover her cash plus transfer fee which she can use more than a gun. Thanks

    Take it Quick!!!

Each discovers each old thing and they throw up their hands and say ‘See! Look what I have found! Look upon what I know!’ And each believes it is something new.

I would take that deal in a heartbeat. It's worth more than $500 plus transfer fees. What state is she in?

I paid just under $400 for one many years ago. They have not gone down in value.

Yep that’s a good deal. I sold one for $400 15 years ago and that one has K frame Combat grips. The grips may be worth $150. I haven’t kept up with pricing lately though.

Those grips may be original according to the guys story. Had it stuff in a sock drawer since the 80s

That one looks to be in pretty decent shape. Ought to be worth $1000 or thereabouts.

Last ones I've seen were in the $700-800 range and they weren't that nice.

    +1 ^^^

Lowest price I have seen one going for since 2020 is $650, and that one did not have the "combat" grips on it. Take it, and don't look back. Figuring 10-20% for a consignment fee and 750 for a price, it would be well worth the $500, since she would receive at least a 50 dollar profit. The grips alone are going for over 150 bucks hereabouts.

I have one out on consignment with a local Gun Shop. Tagged it for $775. But it is @95%.

Those factory “combat” stocks are worth well over $100 all by themselves. I would take the deal unless the revolver had some mechanical issue or the other side reflects sitting on a wet towel for 20 years.

If your mom wants the money instead of the gun, put it on the swapping and selling and start it at some $ amount for bids. OR...you could get her a box of ammo and let her try it out.
These are about as close to a fun gun/family heirloom as you can find.
She might want to keep it after shooting it.

That's an idea. She has a S&W air weight 38spl factory crimson laser grips. It would be more enjoyable for sure especially at 68.

It's worth what someone is willing to pay. $500 is very low. With the factory Combats I'm thinking $800 to $1000

Assuming excellent condition, that’s a good price for a loan trade
