    Hunter in backyard

A bit of long distance for a cel pioneer picture of an adult red hawk. But was in the back yard hunting squirrels this morning. Above the fake rock on the ground.

We have a breeding pair near the house and they both regularly follow me when I'm mowing the pasture. I always jump a few big field rats and the hawks are there for the meal - I've seen them land quite close to the tractor.

Had an eagle perched on my tower yesterday... see them often, get one in the yard 2-3 times a year. 7 or 8 breeding pairs in the river bottom 7 miles north of me.

I'm beginning to wonder if that is the reason we don't have any squirrels around.
We fought them all summer to keep them off the bird feeders, then all of a sudden I realized we have not seen a squirrel in a month.
    ....not that I am complaining.

We have a big population of red tail hawks here.
They have really thinned out the squirrels around here too.

In the six years we've lived here, with rather large open fields and a fair amount of wilderness woods
just a few yards from the house, so thick you can't walk through them-- I haven't seen even one mouse or rat dropping.
