So, my question is, what does it take to kill these armadillos, usually at a close range? Will the shotgun do it? Or will I have to resort to my deer rifle? What part of mid Missouri are you in?
I'm near Columbia,MO. and have something boring huge holes in one of our machine sheds, through gravel? The holes are 8-10 DIA. I've thrown base rock in the hole, and whatever it is pushes it all out?
I was wondering if this may be a armadillo den?

Headed out tonight. I have at least 3 on my property per my game cam. This is probably a mated pair. If the one that came to the front is as big as it looks I'll get a weight on it.

I am just East of Jefferson City. The armadillos here are digging holes only 6 or 8" deep, apparently looking for worms or something. And their dens are usually in the woods starting under old logs and leaf piles. We have a problem like you are seeing in our farm buildings with ground hogs.

Took a walk about 9:30. 50 yds below the house I walked around a tree and almost stepped on the skunk below. It was rolling around on the ground scent marking a spot my dogs have stopped at and sniffed for years.

I've noticed an odor down there but there is a cedar near it so I wasn't sure if it was just the tree. My dog has always stopped down there and took a looong sniff. I backed up and let it go in peace. It never noticed me at all. No dillos in sight tonight.

Neat! I’ve never seen a skunk do that. But I’m drooling on the pillow at 9:30 many nights.

It took me a sec to figure out what was happening then fumbling for the phone while holding the light. Wish I had hit the video button but I didn't have long before he was in the woods.

Speaking of skunks, a couple years ago had one apparently get startled by my AC unit kicking on at night. Sprayed right next to my living room! That was great.

I just watched a program about armadillos last night. Apparently, by studying armadillo skeletons from the past several centuries, scientists determined that American armadillos have only been infected with leprosy since Europeans arrived here. A Leprosy infection leaves indicators on skeletal remains and such indicators aren’t present on armadillo remains that predate the arrival of Europeans and African slaves. To Indigenous American tribes armadillos were food.
So humans originally transmitted leprosy to American armadillos.

Another fun fact is that the American nine-banded armadillo alway gives birth to four baby armadillos that are all the same gender and genetically identical.
Even weirder is that once impregnated, a female armadillo can delay the development of her four fetuses for up to two years. Thus improving the chances of her offspring’s survival until environmental conditions are favorable.
Armadillos are closely related to ant-eaters. Both have acute hearing that allows then to locate the burrowing insects they eat.

Most humans are immune or at least highly resistant to contracting leprosy. I don’t know how they figured that out but I’m not really interested in discovering if I’m in that group.
I do recall in the early 70’s while driving through Florida there was a radio interview with the Director of the Florida department of agriculture about armadillos overrunning the state. He encouraged listeners to harvest armadillos saying they were both edible and flavorful.

Went out at 10PM last night. Full moon looked neat

The garden spiders were really at it and I had to bob and weave.

This little guy hopped across in front of me right away. Very cute little guy. Of course I left him alone.

I popped one armadillo on the edge of a holler and it ran down in the thick brush and I could not verify a kill. That was with 125gr RNFP 9mm. I do not like that at all. Moving forward I will use the 148gr HST loads I have since they blow a 1" hole thru them and remove all doubt of a clean kill.

This is a Garden Spider. The one in your pic is a Woods Spider. I’m glad that they don’t bite because I’ve walked into those webs at night since I was a kid!
We saw a boss hog armadillo by the greenhouse the other night; but I’m one footed currently and didn’t feel up to hauling his heavy carcass off- so I let him pass.
    This time.

Ya know I've called those garden spiders for decades after that's what dad called them Looked them up and they are actually orbweavers of one sort or another. Called different things in different locations: barn spider etc...Thanks for the correction. I think mine are spotted orbweavers from what i could find online.

Hard to tell from the underside. Golden orb weavers are very common around here - Very large female and tiny male. Had two of them in the Meditation Garden at our Church last year. Haven't seen any this year.

I’ve heard them called “Zigzag Spiders” by some young city folks.
They were entertainment for us farm boys. We’d catch grasshoppers, remove their back legs(so they couldn’t kick free), and toss them in the web. The spider would rush over and wrap them up quickly. If hungry, she’d start on them. If not, she’d save it for later.
By summers end, we’d have some Big Fat spiders!
