Bib Overalls - How to...

...buy and wear.

OK, I'm 5'8", 38 waist and a big beer belly.
When I try a pair I have to get at least a size 44
to get around everything, but the bib part sticks
out on the sides like I have wings. Is it that the
new fabric is stiff and a few washings will smooth
everything out, or do I have a hopeless body
shape? I really think bibs are the best concealed
carry option for me but the 'wings' don't work
for me.

Since there are so many of us seasoned gents
on this forum, I figure some of you can advise me
in the proper bib techniques for my situation.

I wear bibs all the time. I'm not going to be much help. I think the first thing to do is admit your waist, if you call it that, is 44". I'm a touch shorter than you and have to buy 42" to get comfortable around my "waist". A laundering or two will probably help. They are the most comfortable item of clothing I have. No need to continuously pull up your pants. Just put your handgun in a pocket and no worries about it pulling your pants down. I have thought about having my wife sew a pocket on the inside of the bib for such use.

A brand new pair of bibs always gets washed before wearing. The fabric will get softer with each washing. I'm up to a size 50 so I can wear a belly band holster.

I like the idea of taking the over-hauls to a local Tailor's Shop for some custom fitting ... but this wasn't exactly the "alteration" I had in mind !!!
Seriously ... Bring them to a Tailor Shop and put them on so he/she can see where to make the alterations ... so altered they will fit properly without extra flaps of material flopping on the sides and you can have them Line a pocket to make a built-in pocket holster .
I have had cargo shorts pockets converted into built in holster for J-Frame S&W's that I pocket carry ...The pocket material is replaced with holster material and shape sewn to fit the revolver . The built in pocket holster works better because it stays in the pocket . For this alteration ... bring the gun(s) .

To size bib overalls for men, you need to12345:
Measure around your natural waistline to find your waist size.
Measure from your crotch to the bottom of your leg to find your inseam measurement.
Consult a size chart to find the right size bib overalls for you.
If you fall between sizes, size up.
Size to the largest part of your waist.
Order based on your normal pant inseam.
Add 4 to 6 inches to the waist size you wear in jeans.
Bib overalls should fit snugly but not too tight.
The inseam should be long enough to cover the ankle, and the waistband should fit comfortably around the waist.

The material in bibs is like most all materials - cotton, linen, etc. It has "sizing" in it . That is what makes it lie so flat on the bolt and what makes the material easy to cut to proper pattern size during the manufacturing process. A washing or two will remove the sizing and the fabric will soften so you shouldn't have as much problems with the bib portion.

Can't help you on the waist - you're on your own their. I'd like to think I still have a 36" waist but reality says it's a 40" - and I don't drink but I know it's time to spend a few more minutes each time I'm on the exercise bike.

Just don't buy 'em like my mother used to buy our jeans when we were kids - and I'm guessing many mothers did as well. Remember well how she would buy
em with longer leg length than needed so we would "grow into them" - always had to roll the legs up so we wouldn't trip on 'em. By the time we "grew into 'em" - they were well patched and about worn out. I'm guessing a lesson they had learned from the Depression when many folks were lucky if they had a pair of pants that fit even if patched.

The "waist" measurement on bib overalls should be the belly measurement. For me the belly measurement is 8-10" bigger than my waist. I wear 36" jeans in the summer and 44" bibs in the cooler months. The plier pocket on the leg makes a dandy place to carry a flashlight.

Bib pocket arrangements seem to be different for each brand, so it seems what you get used to is the brand you buy forever. I wear Keys, and the only difference I can see between what I had forty years ago and this new version is these have a zipper fly instead of two buttons.

The new ones fray and wear out long before they get the silvery faded look that both my grandpa's bibs had, but I use an automatic washer without bleach instead of running them through the bleached water in the wringer washer that had already washed the whites that my grandma's did.

the beauty of them things is you buy em big and them built in suspenders hold em up. where I live you just cant go down the road, go to the gas station, store or high school graduation without seeing 80% of guys wearing them. ventilated and no shirt necessary in summer and put on a tee shirt first in winter and your all set, I won't get into how often most hillbillies wash em.
I went to a friends wedding a few years back and all the men and boys in the wedding party, all of em, got new matching overalls for the special occasion. ive got some wonderful pictures of the backwoods hillbilly wedding.

An option that may be worth considering are those all white all cotton painters' overalls. They're lighter weight and a little cooler. Being all cotton you can make them any color you like. Mine are plain brown courtesy of Rit dye (though tie-dying red, white and blue was darn tempting).

OshKosh B’gosh or Round House was what both of my Grandfathers wore.
My dad never wore overalls- he didn’t like them. He did wear suspenders, though.
I wear them in cool weather occasionally.

Definitely forget about getting them in your regular pants size. Buy them large enough to fit your table muscle.

You can buy direct from the round house website. They have lots of info on proper sizing.
My advice is figure out what size you need, then buy one size larger to allow for any shrinking.

Round house are great. Still made in the USA.
Wore some for the last 3 years I worked to conceal a colostomy.
Definitely order one size larger waist than you think you need.
Inseam length was never a problem.
