    Groundhog Hunting In Style

A few weeks ago I made the rounds to get permission to hunt ducks and geese at a few more places
Most of the land owners had signed the paperwork I had sent them with a stamped envelope

Well yesterday I stopped into a place that I was hoping we could chop part of a cut wheat field
As the geese like a chopped stubble field with fresh green growth
So we can sort of steer the geese to land where we want them to

    We got the OK
But I also saw a groundhog run as I drove in

    I ask about shooting groundhogs
The husband talked to his wife and they said YES

She told me they normally start coming out about 9 AM
So I was to bring my rifle about 8:30
Plan on the long shots to be 60 yards , so I took the Browning 22 Hornet

I got there about 8:30 and was told to come in as they had everything set up
I walk in and there is a table next to a window in the kitchen

I was shooting a Lyman 45 gr GC mold that someone recut the nose to a wider flat nose
Resulting in a 48 or 49 gr bullet out of range lead
    2400 powder
    Winchester cases
    Federal Small Rifle primers
    1650 FPS

As I sat there the wife kept offering me cookies and had a pitcher of ice water there for me

About 11 AM I told them I would be back another day
As I didn't want to bother their lunch

Before I left I picked up the 4 dead Groundhogs that had gotten permanent lead induced headaches

    I took 4 shots between 40 and 50 yards and I saw 2 or 3 more groundhogs
But didn't take shots as they were in front of a shed
So I will set a different place next time to get them

I lived in South Eastern Ohio for a couple of years. I had never seen a ground hog before that. I enjoyed a few hunts. Your experience today was more enjoyable!

I'll hunt grounhogs anyway I can, but you, sir, have found a most pleasant spot to conduct this business. A fellow could gain a few pounds hunting in that manner.
A few details on how the boolits performed would be appreciated.

    4 Ground hog and 3 cookies .....

Sounds like you have a net credit of one cookie available .......

Good job at land owner relationship building. A lot of today's hunters could learn some valuable pointers from you!

    Best regards

Some friends of mine were having problems with a grizzly bear going after their cattle. Janet got home one day, to find a rest set up in the kitchen, with a Sharps rifle sitting on it. Sure enough, she looked out the window, and there was the bear that was causing problems. She opened the window, shot the bear. She got the tractor with a bucket on it, loaded the bear, and parked it in the barn for her husband to deal with when he got home.
The solid soft lead bullet is undoubtably the best and most satisfactory expanding bullet that has ever been designed. It invariably mushrooms perfectly, and never breaks up. With the metal base that is essential for velocities of 2000 f.s. and upwards to protect the naked base, these metal-based soft lead bullets are splendid.

Forget everything you know about loading jacketed bullets. This is a whole new ball game!

When I lived in NJ I would shoot out of the basement window (almost ground level) I used a Winchester Widner musket with a 30" bbl. and .22 shorts, almost like an air rifle.
One afternoon I got five, and decided to wait a while so the neighbor wouldn't se me getting rid of the bodies, Within a half hour the buzzards were on the scene!
