For copper I like KG-12 or Pro-Shot. The KG-12 works faster but patches don't change color. Pro-shot works almost as well and it does remain blue when there is still copper. Sweet's is slow in comparison. PS those two are also nasty kinds of chemicals. Ventilation and gloves recommended.

Ed's Red is the best bore solvent! Plus it's the cheapest when you mix up 3 quarts.

I like Hoppe's No. 9 always said if I met a gal wearing No,9 I would want to date and marry her!!! I have a case of the old WWII stinky bore solvent that smells like Ceasote. This stuff is the best bore cleaner after shooting old mercuric chloride primed surplus ammo. The gas system in an M1 Garand and an M1 Carbine gets fouled with the old mercuric primers. The stinky bore solvent really cleans it. I tested the 20 some cases of surplus Argentine 7.65mm ammo with an old Argentine 1909 rifle to weed out the misfire and dead primers. The bore really fouls because of the mercuric primes but the stinky ole WWII bore solvent cleans the rifle the best.

I”ve been using M-Pro 7 cleaner; seems to work. Still keep No 9 around; old stock.

What ever you decide to use, take a cleaned -or so you think is cleaned- barrel and after a couple of days, run a clean white patch through it. For me, it was an eye opening experience. After I REALLY for the barrels clean that I re-cleaned, it took more shooting to get them to group as well as they previously did.

Bore Tech Eliminator for smokeless powder and J word bullets. Best I've found yet. Take a barrel you think is clean and be amazed what you can get out of it. But mostly since I shoot with black powder now, water is preferred. Or maybe Windex.

Ed's Red should have been a choice I use it or Hoppe's number 9 .
I really did not see Shooters choice working any better .

That reminds me. I've done a decent job cleaning a j word bore with dawn and water. Just have to make sure you oil it well when done.

None of them work well, if they did we wouldn't always be trying to find a better one

Just got some pro-shot copper remover. Coated a 9mm case and a dab on some old pliers. Blue off the case, nothing happened to pliers overnite. Will see what it does in the Henry steel barrel that shows gold coloring. Normally just use Ed's Red.
edit: cleaned the gold color out of the barrel in about 15 min.

FWIW, most of what makes Ballistol a good lube is plain old mineral oil. The rest of it is some sort of petroleum based solvent.

    Ed's Red...hands down...cheap and effective.

Because of Ed's Red working well I started looking at my stash of oils. Turns out I could get rid of almost all my old lubes and just use ATF. For grease I keep some lithium stuff around. I use mineral oil when I want non-stain and non-toxic (like sewing machines) and graphite when I need a dry lube. Made my 'stash' much smaller

After seeing all the praise for Ed's Red, I made a batch. Had acetone, but I sub'd isoamyl acetate in place of the acetone (much lower volatility and, YES! It dissolves plastic just as well! Also makes the mix smell better.). Been running it on the patch for a couple of months, now. Jury is still out if it beats #9, but it is rather less expensive.
Rights, and Privileges, are not synonymous. We have the Right to Bear Arms. As soon as the Government mandates firearm registration, and permiting, then that Right becomes a Privilege, and may be taken away at our Master's discretion.

    Sorry ... I can't play ... You forgot Ed's Red Gun Solvent ...

I can buy one quart of each of the 4 ingredient's at wally's mart for just under $25
and mix up a whole gallon of the best bore solvent you ever used !

I would like to thank Mr. Harris for developing and making the "recipe" available to us shooter's on a limited income ... I can't remember how many years I have used Ed's Red ...but it has been awhile ...
    Thank You Sir !

iirc - correctly Ballistol is all synthetic + does not have any petroleum ingredients - + most mineral oil is a petroleum distillate -
