I did a limited test using 200 grain cast bullets and 5 grains red dot powder small rifle primers averaged 30 f/s slower but had much better standard deviation HOWEVER the large pistol brass was all makes not all the same make as the small pistol brass .

Some may have forgot how this madness started it was to .45 Gap that first used Small primers ...is that round dead yet?

I do not load 45ACP above what most people describe as “Standard Velocity” for the particular bullet used. I have never noticed a difference between those loaded with Magnum, Standard, large or small primers that required a change to the powder charge.

A few powders actually produced less velocity with magnum primers.

I can’t imagine there’s much difference between cci small rifle primers and small pistol magnum primers. I bought spp .45 acp brass a couple years ago and traded all my cci small pistol for cci small rifle primers. I use small rifle in the .45acp with no problems. Saves my large pistol for .45colt, .38-40, .44-40.

Some guns may have to light of a hammer strike for small pistol magnum primers I vaguely remember it being a complaint a few years ago when this madness started .

I have saved my small primer 45's for possible use to swage jacketed bullets for 45-70 .

I inquired with one of the powder companies about substituting Magnum primers for Standard primers. At this point I cannot remember further details. Their reply was that reducing the charge a couple of tenths of a grain should compensate adequately.
