.223 in a bolt gun has versatility. In a semi-auto platform not so much.

I suppose people do get used to the AR's ergonomics, but I find them intolerably clumsy.

No interest in an AR, but .223Rem in a bolt gun is one of my favorite combos of all time.

Not taking animals with it (that's what my 308/358/44's are for), but for trigger time it's the best thing ever.

ARs are the drunk uncle of the family - on the outside I stick up for them because I feel I have to, but they sure are an obnoxious bunch, making scenes all out of proportion to their usefulness. What other quality design would begin with a bolt assist button?

The only reason I want one is because the same govt that handed me one at 19 tells me I can't have one of my own.

I have little or no use for a .223 per se, but a 6.8 would interest me.

I have an Anderson M16A4 copy and a standard Ruger carbine. They both shoot great and are fun. That being said, I like my Ruger American Ranch carbine with Nodak Spud sights better. Never been in the military so I don't have any sentimental attachment to the AR/M16.

The forward assist was added later. The early M16 didn’t have it.
I’ve never used it on mine that have it; my two main ones don’t have it or the dust cover and I miss neither.
I’ll sum the AR15 up like this.
If they weren’t so darn accurate and dependable and ugly; I probably wouldn’t have one!

i have a pile of ars. the most fun ones are my 9mm rifle and pistol. they are much more cast bullet friendly and if you use cast as cheap to shoot as a 22lr and much more fun. accurate to boot. my rifle is the only ar i bought and didnt build. its a cmmg gun and ive shot 2 in 5 shot groups at a hundred yards with a red dot. never had a scope on it but id about bet my house its moa with cast bullets

We now have two AR-15s, both mainly purchased because our leaders don't want us to have them. We have changed some of the furniture and both (S&W and PSA) shoot very well with the old load I have always shot in my CZ 527. I am starting to warm up to them but like other stuff better. Interestingly enough, my 18 year old had rather shoot my Garand or our 1903. Takes after his old man.

My first use of an AR 15 was in Corrections. We had two Colt AR HBARs in the tower, one with iron sights the other with a Leupold 8x range compensating scope. I didn't like them then and I still don't. They are heavy, awkward, have a stock I don't like and a pistol grip that I don,t like. The 5.56/223 I do like but I much prefer it in my M700V or my TC carbine.

If I ever decide I need one, it shouldn't be hard to find one whose owner doesn't need it anymore.

I have owned 3 bolt guns and 2 ARs. I too never saw the need for an AR or 357 mag long gun........until I got one of each. 357 mag is a constant companion at the ranch. AR will be in arms reach on the drive to and fro. I've taken all manner of critters with each. I'll keep them!

The “M”s-(M1 Carbine, Garand, M14, and Mini14) shoulder faster, look and feel better(ergonomic) than the AR family; but normally won’t outshoot one!
Like it or not, the AR 15 IS America’s Rifle.

you complain about weight? i have a 22250 bdl V and its much heavier then even my ars that are scoped and the ars are just as accurate. ar's arent hard to find today though because they are hands down the best selling long gun in the country by probably 10 fold. so it just is logical that there easy to find used. but youd better grap fast while you can. the closer it comes to needing a rifle like them the harder it will be to find one and the more expensive they will be. thats if the government doesnt ban them so theres fewer citizens that can resist socialism. i dont even own a bolt or single shot in 223 anymore. they dont do anything an ar wont do as good or better and bring important things to the table like protecting your family that a single shoot sure isnt a great choice. they may not have pretty wood or bluing but they are probably the easiest gun to repair and the most inherently accurate rifle you can buy today. Whats that old saying about only accurate guns are interesting? I think every gun owner should have at least one. if for no other reason then to show the socialists we arent going to roll over to there plan to control us. theres no doubt in my mind that if i could have only one gun it would be an ar15.

First off, lots of cheap brass (223), lots of critters that need thinning out that correspond with that case size.

    That’s precursor number one.

Second, the ARs are now finally very evolved into a “mature” platform.

I will gladly admit that my bolt guns in the cartridge are my top picks on the ranch but the ARs have a place in my heart now that I have been sufficiently infected by them.

I have gone out to enough rural “after hours” disturbances with them to know that an AR in my hands can handle two or four legged varmints if necessary.

I want a 44 along if it’s dances with bears however!

A does not have an AR, doubt I ever will.

B Understands that those in the military who trained on them would want them.

C .223 Rem in a H&R single shot rifle does make a good tool. Plenty cast bullet friendly, from over 3000 fps to under the speed of sound it can be setup to work.
And do so economically. You'd never have to buy brass. Small rifle primers seem to be easier to find than small pistol.

D I played with Bator bullets with GC and 6 grains of Red Dot, and without GC and 3 grains of Red Dot. Both were minute of squirrel loads.
Aimed at the eye of a squirrel @100 yards all 10 would have penetrated the skull. That is good enough for me. That last was essentially my .22lr replacement.

Just about as quiet, a touch slower with a touch more bullet. With a suppressor in the P-dog towns it would be a killer.
Good varmint killer of most any kind.
I truly believe we need to get back to basics.

    Get right with the Lord.
    Get back to the land.
Get back to thinking like our forefathers thought.

May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you
and give you His peace. Let all of the earth – all of His creation – worship and praise His name! Make His
    praise glorious!

I don’t have a real good reason for not owning a AR except I know it wouldn’t get used much. I have owned a Hakim a Rashid and several M1 carbines and didn’t hold on to any of them long.
I just counted the centerfire calibers that I load for not including shotshells and it is 36, I don’t load any of them on a progressive loader so it’s one at a time and slow. At this point in my life I still hunt , plink, and shoot some targets as I am always trying different loads looking for the best accuracy.
I know just because a AR has a large capacity magazine doesn’t mean you have to empty it but I really don’t like hunting for brass after I shoot it. I do still own a original Ruger carbine in 44 mag and last year bought a Hi Point carbine in 45 ACP and they both have their limited use for me and I intend to hold onto both of them.
Being practical, I should probably own a stack of AR’s as they are a bargain at todays prices and available in about every caliber a person would need and I would enjoy shooting them - but for unknown reasons to me they just don’t make me want to go get one ? It may be a little about the looks, the all black or other color ( not blue and real wood ) or something else but they just don’t excite me.

I probably should get one just because everyone else has one or more but I like being different. For a fun rifle to shoot, I have a 92 Win in 25/20. I would much rather carry this for small game than any AR. For hunting moose or elk, I much prefer my 70 Win in 300H&H or a 700 Rem in 350 Rem mag. I want power, range and flat shooting for large game For varmint or coyote I like my 670Win 243 with it's Shilen barrel. For in house defense it's my 1911 45acp or my 870 Rem 18". For outside the house defense I am limited to a max range of about 300yds because of trees. Most of the property is clear only to 150 yds or less. I have an SKS with a bunch of stripper clips for that. For a truck gun, the TC contender carbine is neat. I fits nicely on the dash, is light and short and doesn't have the sticky outs and weird stock of the AR.

So, I don't really have a need for an AR but if one comes along at the right price I might get one

The AR is the "jack of all trades" of guns. It will do most anything but is not the best of anything except as a military rifle.

I have a love/hate relationship with ARs. I prefer a bolt gun over any other action. However, for coyote hunting or a prairie dog town, there’s nothing better. Also, ARs can be made adaptable for small/new hunters where you need a shorter stock. My daughter shot her first deer at 8 years old with an AR with an adjustable stock and a bonded bullet. It flat out worked where I couldn’t cut the stock on a bolt gun.

Froogal, how does that PC 9 shoot. I have heard they are pretty accurate and then I hear they are not. I like them because they have a more traditional looking profile than the AR. The Henry Homesteader with the walnut stock is more my style but it is a bit pricey..to me at least.
IT AINT what ya shoot--its how ya shoot it. NONE of us are as smart as ALL of us!
