    Pyrodex RS

All, I was gifted a pound of Pyrodex RS. Have any of you used it in say, .45-70? I know they made a product for cartridge rifles, but the label says it's equivalent to 2F black. I've never burned the stuff before, so I was looking for some experienced shooters to chime in. Also. I know it's to be used volume for volume with black.

    Thx

I never used it in cartridges, just in my 2 Hawken rifles. I thought it performed quite well. Clean your gun!

+1 on prompt cleaning!! Pyrodex fouling is highly corrosive...much more so than BP...'specially in a humid environment. A friend wrecked the bore of a pristine Danish RB by letting it sit a day or two after his first trip to the range with it.

Load a couple up and see what happens. Been using it for 30 years in my front stuffers. Works good.

It will work fine in your 45-70. Treat it like black powder to load, using bullets with lots of lube and soft lead. It likes a great deal of compression to burn best. And as mentioned, clean your gun and cartridge cases really well and come back to check on them each week for a while.

I've shot a lot of it and still do, but, only in stainless steel guns. I have witnessed it rusting the bore while shooting it! Not heavy rust mind you but, it did turn the bore brown even with swabbing it between shots, and NO, it was NOT powder fouling.
Old enough to know better, young enough to do it anyway!

Just like with black powder, you can clean with HOT, soapy water, then dry thoroughly and re-lube with your preferred lube.

Same experience. It produces table salt as a byproduct, well salt substitute. Potassium chloride. The potassium perchlorate oxidizer breaks down to potassium chloride during combustion, it is immediately caustic to the barrel.
Real black powder is not immediately caustic but between forming potassium hydroxide and absorbing moisture over time, will become caustic.

If you were to add enough heat as the bore is flash rusting it would actually be hot bluing the inside of the barrel.

Red/plumb iron oxide + heat = black iron oxide.
