Anyone in Clarksville TN have a storage unit???
Thinking of getting one for long term storage.
Thinking of moving there and want to see if I could send things there to kind of plan ahead.
Anyone know how it would compare to PODS storage????

You'll need to contact a moving & storage company and make your best deal.
They'll want to know how much stuff you have and about how much it all weighs.

For long term, the self storage places are cheapest, but you have to bring your stuff there and load it yourself.
A moving company will probably want to put it all in a shipping container, and take it to a storage lot/yard.
When you want your stuff, they'll bring it and unload it.

I do not know if it was me, the people who moved out of the storage unit I temporarily moved into, or just Fate. In Merritt Island, FL I put a small amount of hunting clothes, decoys, camouflage, duck blind building material, and four spare tires and wheels in an empty 10' x 8' unit on a Friday. I knew the owner and his married daughter who worked the desk there. I had been their customer several times in the past. They have video CCTV too. No problemo...

By Sunday, someone (maybe homeless) had twisted off my lock from the door, opened the unit, moved stuff around, taken some woolen socks, hooded sweat shirts, and camo tee-shirts, and vamoosed without any real vandalism. I called the Company Owner and the Sheriff. Nothing on video - dead zone in the back. Not much of lost value to declare, so it was a rather benign interview and report with the Deputy. He scratched his head, I scratched mine, we left wondering what happened. The Owner got right on it, more cameras were added, the locking mechanism was replaced that day. I was given a new lock and two free months, so was OK with that.

Long distance storage - thinking ahead - ask about their insurance, their surveillance, the location of your unit (nearer the office is best), lockset requirement (if any), hours of operation, security codes after hours, cold storage (if needed, usually is different code from yard fence), security lighting, incidence of crime at their location, and MAKE AN INVENTORY (include value) so there is something in evidence if there is ever any problem.

I would think moving from HI to TN, shipping would be your biggest concern. You can't just rent a truck and take it to storage facility. If you plan on moving a lot, a shipping company that would use the containers might be the best idea. As mentioned, it is probably cheaper to sell off what you have and buy new once you arrive. For smaller items, or things you just can't leave behind, if you have relatives in the contiguous 48 you may want to ship it to them.

Wife and I have a friend who lives there. I've never been to the area, but it appears from her description to be a good area. As far as I know, she's not stored anything in a decade or more, so no help there. I would for sure sell off everything I could reasonably do and to plan on purchasing new as needed once you move. If you have a container full of stuff, I'd find out cost to have it shipped all the way and storage for a period of time. Gonna be expensive one way or another.

Had an issue with Pods. When they finally delivered the Pod, driver hands me a bucket of my lead cornbread ingots. Says you must be a reloader. Seems their pallet forks pierced the bottom of my unit (make sure you double check the condition of flooring, etc) and a lot of my lead got thrown about and lost. The pressure upwards destroyed some other things that I didn't know about as it took awhile to empty.
I agree with others saying sell vs ship especially from Hawaii. You just might find out you don't need a lot of that stuff anyway. Good luck.

Things always get lost or damaged anyway. If you move very much you'll quickly realize the more stuff you have the more problems you have.

I despise moving for multiple reasons but keep finding myself having to do it for one reason or another.

I realize it does not answer your question but my niece just had some gear shipped to her in HI. It all went into a CONNEX box and I believe the cost was around $7k which was well above the value of the items.

A friend of mine has had a storage unit for about the last thirty years, that I know of. He told me once that it's only fifty dollars a month. Fifty times twelve times thirty comes to eighteen thousand dollars. He probably has about a thousand dollars of junk in there, and before you ask, yes I have seen it.

How many storage sheds complete with concrete could he have built for $18K? And if it's $50/month it's likely not very big, either. Grandfathered in on the rent or not.

If you don't have a definite plan to get your stuff out of storage in less than 6 months you'd be much better off to sell it or throw it away

I was thinking of doing that, but no address yet, and I'm not sure how secure they would be.
Things getting crazy here.
Planing to get all firearms out of here before the hammer falls.
Have friend in Clarksville, and a sister in Spring Hill.
Maybe joining one of them in the future.
Hope not, but they way things are going here, gotta plan ahead.

+++ this is the absolute truth.

Add to that, most storage unit companies require annual proof that the contents of your unit is covered by HO or other insurance; or you can buy a policy from them, or store elsewhere.
Unless the storage unit you rent is built like a bank vault, don’t store firearms or other valuables in it.

This is so true.
I've helped people numerous times move things into storage for a "month or two". Years later that month or two hasn't ended yet ant they are still paying monthly rental. Several times I've thought what we moved into storage wasn't worth the monthly rent to start with. Full disclaimer...this is coming from a guy who paid $4000 to have a shed built in his back yard that is packed with a couple hundred dollars worth of junk he will likely not use again.
