    Lube for BP

What are you guys using for lube on your bullets, round balls? I am planning to run conical sand round ball bullets in my 1860 along with possibly 45 colt cartridges in the future.

Every one has the best recipe ever made. I like Gato Feo # 1, an old but resurrected recipe from Winchester and republished in an NRA magazine some 80 years ago. Easy to make and works well with cartridges, patches, and wads. By weight; paraffin, mutton tallow, and bees wax in a 2:2:1 proportion. Mutton tallow has the advantage of not prone to going rancid as well as working well to keep the fouling soft. Contrary to what someone is apt to spout out; paraffin, although being a petroleum derivative, does not contribute to concrete in your bore. In my 45-70, I’ve shot 60 consecutive rounds using only a blow-tube and fouling was not an issue. I’ve done it in hot/humid central Florida and the hot/ dry prairie in Montana leading up to the Quigley. For a cap and ball, I’ve never had a cylinder foul out.

50-50 olive oil and beeswax. Simple, cheap and works.

Good enough for the Royal Italian Army over the entire black powder era.

Both beeswax/olive oil & beeswax/crisco have worked for me.
I prefer the crisco mix at 60/40 during the summer in SoCal. A bit stiff but it doesn't melt in 100 degree heat in SoCal.
