Redding introduced this mould at a SHOT Show exhibit about thirty-five years ago. After looking at it, I had to have one and ordered the mould soon after I got home. This is a two-cavity mould for a 480-485 grain (soft alloy, about 11 BHN) semi-spitzer plainbase bullet. I worked with it only a short time. While accurate, recoil was noticeably more than with the 420 grain Lyman flatnose design I had been using.
I became curious about this design again and just cast a few bullets. The only .45-70 I have left is a Shiloh Sharps I've had for more than thirty years, but I've fired it very little in recent times. Anyone else use the #645 in a .45-70? Any smokeless only load recommendations?
