    Hodgdon H322 or H4198 - I'm dyin' for some...

I've got to make some loads for 38-55 (255gr FP), and the only data I can find is for H322 or H4198.
But there doesn't seem to be supply anywhere.

IMR 4198 is in supply, but that's not the same as H4198, and there's no load data for the IMR that I've found.

Any ideas on where I can buy a pound of H322 or H4198?

    Thanks....

The older lyman manuals have data for 3031 4895 5744 and others.

Your cartridge is not well supported for load data. The number of loads @ Shooters Reference Load Data is pretty minimal.

In a case like this, some very conservative info from Quickload (QL) could be useful. I took a Lyman cast bullet and adjusted the weight to 255 gr. I set max pressure to a mild 28,000 psi (QL says max is 34809 psi). I set minimum fill to 85%.

It turns out H332 is pretty good, but some ball powders (H335, BL-C2 and 748) are about the same. Ball powders seem to be much more available / less overpriced right now.

Although IMR 4198 and H 4198 are not identical, QL shows IMR with only 0.1 gr higher for a charge and a little better for velocity.

Accurate powder availability also seems pretty good and QL predicts good performance.

I did compare the data below to published data where available. QL loads are below published loads for 332, H4198 & 3031 (as expected given the reduced maximum pressure I used).

FYI, If you want better predictions, specifics such as barrel length, actual bullet length and COAL are helpful. Also worth discussing is your desired use. The 38-55 is pretty potent at the power level shown, but could be pushed a little harder if there is a need and if you are confident in the pressure margins on your gun.

    Code:
    Cartridge : .38-55 Win.
    Bullet : .375, 264, LYM LFN GC 375449 (weight set to 255)
    Seating depth : .625 inch
    Barrel Length : 24.0 inch = 609.6 mm

    C A U T I O N : any load listed can result in a powder charge that falls below minimum suggested
loads or exceeds maximum suggested loads as presented in current handloading manuals. Understand
that all of the listed powders can be unsuitable for the given combination of cartridge, bullet
and gun. Actual load order can vary, depending upon lot-to-lot powder and component variations.

I use Unique for black powder load velocities, IMR 4198 for hunting loads, and IMR 3031 if I want to approach .375 Winchester levels( I don’t very often).
The Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook is a good source of 38-55 data.

Reloder 7, IMR 4198, Accurate 2015, and 3031 all work in the 38-55. Barnes lists Reloder 7 and 3031, Lyman adds 5744 and IMR 4895, other powders that work Accurate 2200, 1680, 2495, Vitvourhi 130 in various listings.

As P Flados said, IMR 4198 and H4198 are not the same, but they are similar. H4198 has shorter sticks in my experience, although it also seems to be a little slower from my observations. But that's in no way scientific, and if you ask a hundred people what the difference between them is they'll likely all give you a different answer.

That said, you should be able to use a reduced loading to work up a load, use the QL data posted above, or there is always two other options: 1) Gordon's Reloading Tool, 2) Reloader's Reference

    1) Gordon's tool is nice, but is no longer kept up - he passed away. It has some data, but should be used with caution as it just doesn't have all the information to be super accurate at this time. And I'm not sure if it has data for the 4198s (though from memory I think it does). You can find it here: https://www.grtools.de/doku.php

    2) Reloader's Reference is an older tool available online that has load recipes for lots of cartridges and powders. It's more of a database if you will. But also allows you to manage stock and add your own loads. Again, it takes some tinkering to get working - you have to move some items around. But there are several threads about this on the forum. You can just search for those... But here is the location of the download for Reloader's Reference: https://reloadersrfrnce.sourceforge.net/

Between the two of those, you should be able to find something that will work for you.

My thanks to everyone for the input. I do have a supply of IMR 3031, so with the info from PFlados and the Lyman manual, I should be able try out my new Uberti 1894.
Much to learn for this newbie, but Cast Boolets has already proved a great resource.
    Thanks again....

Warning: The data previously posted was with a "random" seating depth. Seating depth can really make a difference. I will be happy to re-run specific powders with actual seating depth and barrel length.

For 3031, the load shows 105% fill, and it shows lower than typical pressure. Your 3031 will probably work but is likely to leave more than desired unburned powder. Going slightly higher on charges and compression may give better results.

H322 is one of my goto powders for a slew of calibers I load for. I haven't seen any in my neck of the woods for about 3 years or so.
