No downside. They shoot great within 25 yards. Flat based boolits tend to be more accurate at moderate velocities. After that you need a gas check. Hope that helps.

I shoot the Lee 158 gr FNRN in full power .357 mags with great accuracy and no leading. A bevel base or flat base is pretty much a personal choice and for me does not make any difference out to thirty meters or further. The dead feral pigs or feral dogs that I shoot don't seem to know the difference.

Where they will get you into trouble is if your alloy and maximum pressure of the round are not in sinc. High pressure you need a harder alloy.

Bevel base bullets fall out of the molds easier, they are also easier to set in the case.

Been casting and shooting them for years, have not found a down side to them.

As stated, they're great if you're not using gas checks. They slide right into the mouth of a slightly flared cartridge case. I prefer them for middle-of-the-road loads.

In heavy loads a bevel base is less prone to "cupping" caused by base deformation.

I shot the LEE 158 FN bevel base in a 350 Rem Mag at 1,350 -1,400 ish. I load the same 50 cases and walk around and shoot them off hand at various gongs I have set up.

My 200 gr Lee Wadcutters do extremely well with AA#7... It did Not hurt (nor Help) when I removed the Bevel Base!! But cleaner!!

I had a guy mill the sizing die plug to match the bevel base. No more lube on the base and the sizer still works fine for plain base bullets. An excellent fix!

I shoot 135 grn bevel base NLG in 9 mm. BB is easy to cast and load,shoots fine. Coated, my alloy is on the hard side. My mold is a Mihec 8 -banger, I load with a stock Square Deal.

I also shoot this Accurate Molds 480 Ruger BB NLG bullet in a 470 NE rifle. Easy to cast, double PC,load,bang... A nice 400 grn practise load @ 2000 fps, shoots very clean. About 16 BHN.

I’m experimenting with bevel bases lately. I’m seeing more weight variations, which I think is the result of the base not being fully filled out. A rounded base is easy to see when you are casting a flat base, but a rounded base is not so easy to see when you have a bevel base. I’m sure there’s more for me to learn here, but the basic problem I haven’t solved yet is higher weight variation with my bevel base boolits. It could just be me and not necessarily bevel base designs in general.

Loading in volume (1-2 K per month) I find BB bullets faster and easier to load on a progressive press.

I have a few moulds which purportedly cast the same, identical bullet with ONLY dif being its base -- plain or bevel -- and on paper (target) I have yet to see any difference. My thoughts include the bevel base was conceived to be an "improvement" in the loading/seating of the cast bullets to minimize any distortion to them in the bullet-seating reload stage. In this vein, it is an "upside"/improvement, with, again, zero negative results at the range.
