    Maybe they had two guns ,and have sold the wrong one for $500.........seen that happen with clueless people .

    I could totally see that happening there.

    Right now a rack grade M1 is$700 and an expert grade (new barrel and stock) is $1150 on the CMP sales site. Not quite $1500 but starting to get close and probably about right for a civilian market assuming the barrel and stock are okay. If you just"gotta have" and M1 qualifying to purchase from the CMP isn't all that hard.

    One of the two Garands I got from the CMP years ago is a Springfield with a 5 digit serial number. It was arsenal reconditioned of course, and most of the other parts seem to be from the 1950s.

    A lot depends on whether it’s been subject to Bubba-butchery. That receiver alone, if unmolested, could be worth some money to either a pre-War collector or an M1 fan wanting to build a “correct” rifle from that time period.
