    Rifle Identification

    https://www.facebook.com/10004434763...P1qW1QNuQQc7l/

This picture of Devil Anse Hatfield is circulating on Facebook right now - I’m sure it’s not the first time…LOL

At any rate, I think he’s holding a ‘93 Marlin (or maybe an ‘89). The caption describes a Winchester but that name always sold newspapers better than Marlin. What say ye here on the forum? I was basing my opinion on what seems to be a square lever but I can’t see the fine detail.

I think it I agree that is a Marlin, it seems like it has the squared off lever, but the picture is so poor when blown up that it loses detail to the point that truly accurate identification is impossible at least for me.

Looks like the square bolt of an 1893 Marlin. The cartridge belt looks like it would hold a longer round than the 1889.

That’s what I thought - but the person who posted the pic claims it’s a ‘73 Winchester.

Lookin at the length of the cartridges in the bandolier: the receiver is large on the rifle. Could be an 1886 Winchester!

    .

AFAIK, Winchester never made a pre-64 levergun with a squared lever loop.

That, combined with what looks to be a carbine buttplate would make it a Marlin 1893, like John stated.

Seen else where that the Hatfields bought a big lot of new 1873s,like 20 or so...........so I d assume the uneducated in guns would think this was a sure nuff fact.
