    32 rim fire mold ideas

Mold needs to be .314 dia. and about 95 grains. The cases are 32 centerfire and will be sized in a 32S&W die. Any thoughts on how to build a mold. I have a lathe and mill just not sure on making the heeled part smaller and going in for the larger diameter.

    Thanks Ray

Accurate has several different mold designs for heeled bullets meant for the .32 Colt cartridges, both Short and Long.

The .32 S&W sizing die will not work with a cartridge diameter of .314".

There is a very long thread in the rimfire section on getting old rimfires shooting again.

    To make the mold.
    1. Use your lathe
    2. make a drawing at whatever x will mostly fit on your paper in landscape mode. Do leave enough room around the edges for lots of notes, dimensions, calculations etc.
    3. Make at least 2 boring bars. One for the lands/grooves (basically a grooving tool), and one for the nose (form cutter).
    4. set up blocks in four jaw, square and centerlined to bore.
    5. Rough the cavity with a drill bit. Leave enough material to be able to get exact dimensions on two cuts. (first one with the nose tool, second one with the land/groove cutter.)
    6. With the nose tool, take a light cut, deep enough to get a full diameter measurement. Back out without messing with cross-slide. Measure the hole. Go back to full depth with carriage, bring cutter to full finished nose diameter with cross-slide. Let it run till the spring is out of the bar. Return to your original cross-slide setting and retract cutter.
    7. Look at your drawing, do your math and mark the drawing for each part of the lands/grooves. Go for it.
    8. Deburr (very gently, with a slip and magnification), cast a bullet, check against drawing. First one or maybe first several will probably not be right, due to learning curve.

I will say that I have made several over the years and at one point worked about 5 years in a shop where there were a couple well known mold makers. I am glad for the experience and have the machinery and tooling but will not make a mold if I can buy one.
Accurate Molds and Old West Moulds both make heel bullet molds for the 32's.

The accurate 31-090S bullet is what you want. It is 93gr and was designed by the late John Kort - it is a very accurate bullet. I use it primarily in my .32 extra long rimfire and centerfire (.32 Ballard extra long) cartridges. But it can be used in shorter cases as well. You can either order a mold from Accruate or the bullets from Jack Harrison.

Don't ignore Old West Molds. He makes molds for multiple sizes of heeled molds. He is a specialist in this area.
