are slides fires legal or illegal?

while visiting a local gun shop this guy was talking about how much fun he has shooting his AR with a slide fire bump stock on it.
doing google searching got me conflicting info.
does anyone actually know are those things currently legal or illegal?

My understanding is that two circuit courts found them illegal and one legal. Supposedly was referred to Supreme Court yesterday.

That's correct, it's headed to the SC.

    So they are legal then?

All depends on how the decisions were explained and whether any were stayed dependent on further proceedings as well as where you live and what jurisdiction you are in. Not confusing at all...

To be safe from possible prosecution/confiscation I'd wait for the Supreme Court Decision.

Agreed, although it may depend on which appellate court district you're in, you can't trust LE to give you the benefit of doubt.

BATF has stated for decades that any more than one round fired with a single pull of trigger to be full auto + comes under NFA regulations -

And that is why originally the bump fire stocks had BATF approval. Bump stocks under the 1934 NFA do not fit the definition of full auto since only one round is fired per trigger pull.

jmho iirc - the bump stock causes the trigger to be activated on every recoil reaction which would constitute another trigger pull -

WHAT? BATF changed their minds on bump stocks? Good thing they didn't do the same thing with 80% frames/receivers or pistol braces. They'd NEVER issue multiple letters declaring something as legal over the years and then suddenly declare a change of thought and declare them illegal, would they???

Only in one circuit court (5th?). It was upheld in two or three others...
