Question about the shellholder used for vintage Lyman 310 .357 magnum pistol dies?

    Hello...

I inherited my Grandfather's Lyman 310 pistol dies...for .357 magnum/38 Special. The set came with the Lyman 7/8"-14 thread adapter for 310 dies and Lyman Model 55 powder measure.

I can screw in the Lyman thread adapter into my RCBS Rockchucker press with the Lyman 310 pistol dies.

My question is this: What shellholder would I need to use these dies to reload .357 magnum ammo on my RCBS Rockchucker press? Do I need to buy the original vintage shellholer? If so, does anyone know what number shellholder that is?

Or can I just buy a modern Lyman .357 magnum pistol shellholder and use it instead?

    Thank you.

    Eric

I inherited much of my wife’s grandfather’s Lyman equipment years ago I’m somewhat familiar. The Lyman press I inherited took Lyman shell holders .

Buy a set of Lee shell holder inexpensive and a great value especially if you plan on expanding your reloading capabilities.

Here are some pictures. Yes, I want to use these old vintage Lyman 310 dies to reload .357 Magnum bullets. I also have one hundred vintage "Carrol" brand lead .357 Magnum bullets...158 grain with gas checks. Those were my Grandfather's as well.Click image for larger version.

HL54, the shell holder you need is dependent on press being used and caliber being loaded. Unless you have a very early RCBS press, it takes the so-called “universal” shell holders, standardized by RCBS decades ago. The specific shell holder you need will depend on the caliber. Just for example, for loading 38s and 357s, you could use the Lyman X-1, or its RCBS or Lee equivalent.

Because of differences in priming stems, I prefer to match the SH to the press by manufacturer, when I (rarely) prime on rhe press. If, OTOH you’re priming off press by hand that point is moot.
