    10-6 1967 Begin D serial prefix at D1
10-6 1968 Delete diamond insert grips.
10-7 1977 Gas ring change from yoke to cylinder on standard barrel
10-8 1977 Gas ring change on heavy barrel model
10-8 1981 Logo moved from the sideplate on the left side of the frame to facilitate sideplate engraving.
10-8 1982 Eliminate pinned barrel, start 3 letter serial prefix.

Has to be made 1977 to 1981 or early '82. Likely '81 or early '82, as they started with D1 in '67 and yours is D6, some 600,000 revolvers later.

D683,XXX should be 1974-1975, per the 3rd Edition Standard Catalog, p. 399, but , P. 142 gives the above dates. If the gas ring on your revolver is on the crane, you may have misread the model number and actually have a 10-6. The last "D" serial number was D999,999 in 1977, they changed to 1DXXXXX, then 2DXXXXX and so on up until 1983, when they switched to the 3 letter 4 number serial system now in use.

In November of 1975 I was gifted a very new (as in unfired) S&W Model 10 revolver by a friend. The serial number for that .38 Special was D528428, odd arrangement of numbers but they made it easy for me to remember them. He did not mention how long he had owned it but I suspect it was a short time.
