    7.8x58mm cartridge not 7.8x78mm

I screwed up the other post so I thought I would start a new one with the correct chamber size and hopefully pictures. I could make a lot of excuses for posting the wrong caliber, but I'm not.
This might be a bit easier to figure out. Thanks for the previous answers. Again a German O/U Cape gun. Is it not made after 1952 with those markings?Click image for larger version.

Still need some measurements to narrow it down. whats the dia. in front of the rim? I'm thinking a 30/40 Krag case might be a possible parent case with some tweaking...

Agreed but it's the only 7.8 anything that comes up on the web. It's a start. Is the bore diameter the same?

I seem to remember an 8mm "straight wall" type cartridge that was loaded in the Husqvarna Model 33 rolling block rifles. I think there is a discussion of that cartridge somewhere on here.

I think I have it narrowed down to a 8x58 Sauer. Dimensions are real close. Now the hunt for brass, bullets and dies.

Concur with that assessment. Many "8mm's" made between the wars use a 7.7, 7.8 and 7.9 designation to avoid legal problems with the Armistice. When I worked with a similar cartridge in a drilling which had a 7.7 designation with a .318 groove diameter barrel I was able to get the dies and cases from RCBS. Very spendy though.

Just for fun I held a vernier caliper to the chamber cast image, and came up with the following dimensions.

    base dia. .446
    rim dia. .507
    case length 2.07
    bullet dia .324

By my crude measurements a .303 British case could be used with a bit of file work .

    What I measure on the casting is;

    base dia. - .440
    rim dia. - .504
    case length- 2.330
    throat dia. - .323
    bullet dia. - .318

I ordered 20 cases from Buffaloarms. I'll wait on the dies. Already have the .318 dia. bullets.
    The fun begins!

I think you could blow out 303 Savage brass and make a short version of your brass.
I have 100 of the PPU 303 savage brass and it’s good stuff and I think is still available.
It would be about a 1/4 “ short but may work in a pinch.

    Thanks Jedman,

I have some .303 Savage cases that I may try if the other cases don't work.

Nonte recommends to use 30-40 cases and thin the rims.
