    speed green

hi all. i am getting ready to make some speed green i think the recipe called for 2 onces of bull plate lube and 6 onces of beeswax. can i measure a block of beeswax before it is melted (6 onces) and go from there or does it need to be melted and done by volume in a measuring cup. thanks to all.

The mix is by weight 3 to 1, 3 beeswax to 1 bull plate. Going by volume throws it off.

I cut the beeswax into chunks with my miter saw and weigh it on a postal scale. A handsaw would cut it to. Its a little hard to cut with a knife.

I just put a block of beeswax outside for ten minutes, wrap it in several layers of news paper then smack it with a hatchet. Bingo lots of little peaces. If ya dont have a frozen outside you can improvise.

I put my large "loaf" of beeswax into the micro and nuked it a few minutes. It then became warm and soft so I could slice it up into smaller pieces. These smaller slices are easily handled with the regular kitchen knife.

I used to grate the beeswax before, but that was really slow and messy.

Smile Has anyone everjust figured BD for

If someone has figured out the bulk density for "beeswax" then we could just measure a chunk to "weight".

    Bullshop,

What is the best method of mixing these ingredients? A whisk? stir stick? kitchen mixer?

Bullplate will mix so readily with bees wax that there is almost no need to stir.
Its kinda like pouring koolaid into a pitcher of water. Does that give a hint to how old I am? Anyway use the KISS systam. Use what ya got and just give it a quick stir.
Once the ingrediance are mixed it does not sepperate so you can remelt it to fill your sizer and not worry about it sepperating. The most important thing I have found to makeing speed green is to use a double boiler to melt the wax. Over heating the wax to the point of scorching degrades the quality of the wax.
I know nothing of how a micro wave affects the quality of the wax as I have no experiance with such a device. Until someone comes up with a wood fired micro wave its not likely I will learn.

What's really scary Dan, is that you're likely talking about the ancient small packets of Kool Aid, where you put in your own sugar (which is much too complicated for the "modern" man)...

Of course the chief advantage of making Kool Aid this way (which any frugal little old lady Sunday school teacher knows) is that you can "cheat" on the sugar. This not only stretches a 5 lb. bag, but makes the little boys slightly less hyper active.

Don't ask me how I know

I have no experience with such a device. Until someone comes up with a wood fired micro wave its not likely I will learn.

Man alive, even the Walton's had "electrified lights"

    secretly jealous here.

Maybe I need to move from the extreme southern end of Maine to the extreme northern end. I bet I could pick up a hundred acres and a fixer up farm house for a song.

Bullshop, could you give us an approximent size block of beeswax for a 2 oz bottle of lube? I am trying to figure out how much speed green I could make from a bottle.

    Thanks,
    Crabo

OK but this is just a rough estimate right, no exactness here. I weigh my wax on a battery powered postal scale and the mix is 3 to 1 by actual weight not by volume.
Measuring by volume will give way too soft a lube.
Here ya go if you want to scan a pile o wax and get a rough estimate of how much lube it will make. My well claiberated eye says about a heaping full coffie cup will be about right for one 2 oz bottle of bullplate. Not one a them tiny lady size cups either I mean a man size mug. Thara ya go.

You can thank the rain for my early arrival here this year. Man I got so much work to get done and moose, caribou, and grizzly bear season starts on the 10th. Work wet or hunt wet what would you do?

Bullshop: my teenager wants to know how you access the internet without electricity, satellite? generator? Send any extra rain here, please. Evidently you do not run heat with speed green? I would have thought that 3 to 1 would be rather stiff. DALE

oh, now they add the sugar for you, put it in a large pouch and jack the price up 3X what normal sugar costs.....

Thank the Good Lord my kids drink water! I'd go broke paying the dentist bills....

OK Dale I gotta fess up, we got power. We just choose to not have some of the power gizmoes that folks feel they need like TV, fidgerizer, micro wave and lotsa others. We try to maximze the KISS prinsiple.
We seem to have to have this computer for business. Since I quit doing gun shows I would guess 90% of our business is internet and 10% walk in customers.
Ya mite just say we aint swimin with the school.

No Sir the bullplate is by actual weight too. Those little white bottles filled to the top hold 2 oz by weight.

Do you need heat to use speed green in a star? I started to cut my beeswax into smaller chunks so it would melt faster, and it is some hard stuff. I am wondering how much heat it is going to take to use it in a Star? I normally just use a light bulb on my star with BAC.

    Thanks,
    Crabo
