    2 9/16" Loads ?

I was gifted a L.C. Smith 12 gau side by side
It still needs a LOT of cleaning and this is after I already spent a good amount of time cleaning
As I hope to hunt with it , I made a replacement stock
    A simple and plain replacement
As the butt stock was badly cracked and a REALY BAD repair attempt was made

Best I can read , it has 2 9/16" chambers

I have 1X fired Federal Paper hulls , card and fiber wads
I got with the shotgun a roll crimper and a Hull cutter

    But my question
    I have 1F black powder

I was going to load 1 oz of #6 shot
I the notes I got with the shotgun
He loaded with 1 oz of shot , 80 gr of Black Powder by volume of 2F ( what hull was not listed )

I was hoping a 80 gr of Black Powder by volume of 1F would work
I figured I would have lower velocity , but that would be OK

Would the 1F Black Powder work ?

    Thanks
    John

It will work and it is a relatively light load for a 12. It will produce less velocity and less pressure than 2F. The load is very similar to what I feed my Ithaca Lewis with a 2.5" chamber.

    Thanks
    I figured it would work
But I felt it would be a good idea to ask

In my opinion 1Fg is the ideal powder for 12 gauge. Some disagree, but it does work really well.

I would tend to agree, but I can no longer get any here.

You might try Precision Reloading they carry different 12 ga hull lengths and plastic and felt over and under shot wads.

For my starting loads in BP in shotshells, I always use a volume measure.
The same measure that throws whatever shotload I want ( 1oz for example),,then use the same measure full of BP for the powder charge.

It'll be a minimum/light load,,but one that will break clay target easily. It will be kind to the gun and you.

Paper hulls and card and fiber wads are what BP really needs.

Plastic wads and plastic hulls will oftn melt from the high temp of BP burn. That leaves melted strings of plastic in the bore.
Some hulls and wads are worse than others.
The only hull that I've ever found that didn't melt with BP or a Substitute was the Remington BLACK plastic Game Club hull/ I don't know if they even load that anymore.

Wads of any make always melted.

Paper hulls will last about 3 reloads before they get small perforations around the base right above the 'brass' head.'Always check the bore(s) after each shot for a stuck base wad in the bore.

Fun shooting. The bbl's get very hot very quickly. So summer time shooting can be kind of painful on a Skeet course.
