He smiled. “Men do not learn from history. Each generation believes itself brighter than the last, each believes it can survive the mistakes of the older ones. Each discovers each old thing and they throw up their hands and say ‘See! Look what I have found! Look upon what I know!’ And each believes it is something new.

Would need to know the shank sizes and or dias of it but I believe it may be a engraving cutter for use in a panto graph or engraving in a cnc mill

The only thing that I have seen that was similar is on a buddy's small wood lathe. It might be a drive center mounted in the spindle for driver small diameter items. He uses it high end wood pens he makes and sells.

That is a carbide point that has been brazed onto a mandrel. A drag point for a pantograph marking machine. These are used in CNC machines for marking soft steel and aluminum.

It's a grind center for grinding parts between centers. Normally you use a lathe dog for driving the part, but then you can't grind the full length in one setup.

That was my thought also but in actual usage I have only seen them on wood parts. I think we have a winner.

Thinking you nailed it. Full length is the key. I kind of figured out that the shape is helpful for turning the part but was not sure of the reason for not using a dog.
Thanks a million! Now it is clear.
