Been casting 3 yrs, fresh here

I came to the forum from the FB page. Figured it would be better here with more freedom. I been using straight COWW lead for casting mostly for pistol. I have a bit of virgin pure sheet lead that I would like to harden to use in pistol and I also now have a lyman 130gr .308 mold to cast for 300blkout. Still learn where the proper categories are to post in so bare with me please.

Welcome to the forum. I mix 50% wheel weights and 50% pure lead (plumbers lead, stick on wheel weights, roof flashing) and 2 % pewter for my pistol boolits.

Your question does not ask what a good pistol alloy is, but how to harden soft lead. Most simply add percentages of hard alloys such as linotype or any other type metal one can find at the metal scrap yards. Or check the swap and sell section to see if anyone is offering excess from their supply to others. Simple works best for persons new to casting. Welcome to the forum, please take the time to review the stickies in the various topics.

I'm familiar with hardness for what pistol, mag pistol, and rifle requires. I was going to buy super hard from rotometals to harden my softey up a bit. I'm basically waiting my 30 days and posts so I can get up in the swapntrade, so I can post a trade. Last one didn't happen, but that was a while ago.

Welcome aboard the madness. Yes this site is more more liberal than FB. As with all "new" folks if you don't have your copy of "From Ingot to Target" (http://www.lasc.us/articlesfryxell.htm) it is highly recommended reading and the site itself contains a lot of information. Some if which is the info you are looking for.

Are you a certified Cajun or a transplant? We will be down in Breaux Bridge for the crawfish festival this May along with visiting family in the area.

I have a handle on the what and how. I have read a lot over the last 3 years. Have the Lyman cast reloading handbook. Plus vital info from content creators like fortunecookie45 and Elvisammo. I'm not brand new to casting or alloying, just new to this webpage and forum group. Since we can't buy, sell trade on other platforms anymore, I needed another way. I'm waiting to get up in the swap, sell, trade board to do some trading.

I cast mostly for 9mm and .357/38spl, also I am on the PC wagon and have been since I started. Just now about to start casting for rifle, 300bo 130gr. I don't know everything and never will. I will learn a lot from just reading through the pages here. Thanks for all the replies

Lived in Louisiana my whole life. Central Louisiana more country folk and farm land, I'm not far enough down south to be Cajun lol. Its been a while since I have been to the crawfish festival. We usually just have get togethers at each other's homes and have crawfish boils here.

Fort Polk, Louisiana!! Are those barracks from WWI still standing? Spent some time living in those back in the day.
Personally I would try to hold onto the ww & pure that you have, at least for use in pistol. See if you can come up with some range lead for use in it.
You're probably already aware of it, but fit is king. A properly sized bullet, of the proper alloy, and with a velocity to match same, and you should be good.

    Welcome

Yes some old barracks are still there lol.. My son is actually working there now as a contractor remodeling those old barracks. Some new barracks have been built as well. The amount of pure sheet lead I may have is probably more then I would ever use in my life. I know black powder caster need pure. So once I can get in the sale, buy, trade I'm going to post a trade deal.

Howdy from Ky. I reckon since you're just biding your time to get into the swappin and sellin section, no reason to ask ya what kind of guns ya like eh?

I am here because I have a passion for firearms and I enjoy shooting lead bullets because of the cost savings and the personal satisfaction it brings. I also think we have a great S&S section too. I sell when the notion hits me. Buy when the money hits. I also really enjoy some of the stories that folks share here. I don't care for politics so I generally steer clear of that area.

I didn't mean to come off like I was just here for the swap shop section, I do plan to stick around and learn some stuff. I didn't even know this site existed until I seen it on the FB cast boolits page, I would have been here sooner. Handgun of choice is a Glock variant. My most fun gun is an AR9. I moved last year and just now got my reloading bench set back up. I only have about half of my stuff at the new place, the rest is still at the old house place. I'm going to start casting again here soon so that's why my interest in lead has come about again.
