Gas Checkless Revolver Boolits

I'm in my quest to make the ultimate percussion revolver self-defense set up and I thought this boolit might work.

I'd like to try and press a hollow point in without destroying it. I figure if I don't check the base it should center itself in my chamber.

Has anyone tried a crazy idea like this before?

Why not just get a mold from NOE as cast some? Seems it would be much simpler.

I did something similar with my old Remington several decades ago.

Lee 230TC. The bevel base was just about right to allow shaving off a bit. Had to cast it out of almost pure lead. Otherwise it would flatten the nose as it was pressed in with the arbor press. Note that the Remington did not have enough clearance to load these in the gun. I had to remove the cylinder and load them on the bench.

They were as accurate as round ball. I only stopped using them due to the loading routine.

I had both of them made up at accurate molds and cut to drop bullets at .458” I can then size .457 and lube. The light bullet is used mostly in my 1860’s. The heavy one is for the Ruger Old Army’s.

The dead soft RB is a pretty impressive terminally.
There is a Pickett bullet that is a conical and adds about 30% to the weight .

A flat base hemispheric bullet with a base just a slip fit with a full .003-5 over chamber dia would be about ideal as a loadable ball .

I do have a 429421 relieved to .448 which makes not only an ideal .451/2 paper patch but is a friction fit in both of my 44 CB . The nose with the first band in the chamber will just pass into the rammer .

Nice looking boolit. I used the old Big Lube bullets in my ROA.

My goal is to shoot expanding hollow points. They would likely have to be pressed in off the gun with maybe a wooden spike fitted to the cavity. I know balls work well but I'd like to see how far I can push it.

I shoot hollow points in mine, yes they slightly deform the nose but if its a self defense situation will it really matter? You still have the cavity plus it's soft lead. Should really smack whatever it hits.

Jack, can I ask what mould you are using?

You could always make up a new ramrod for your pistol that is the shape of the HP lead Boolits if that is the load you prefer to shoot all the time.
It should press the Boolit in , without crushing the HP down.

When running my own testing it was surprising how little penetration there was with wadcutters compared to semi-wadcutters and round flat noses. The flat wadcutter nose made like a drag chute, giving half the penetration with the same powder charge and close to the same boolit weight. SWC worked well, about the same as the light weight boat tail round noses (aka round ball).
