    PC flaking

I’ve got some Lee 429-200RF that I coated with Smokes clear powder. One batch (150-200) is occasionally flaking when sizing, almost feels like paint vs polymer. Kinda gritty almost, or something. Can easily be scratched off with a finger nail…
Never had this happen before, kinda at a loss.

Can this batch be saved, or just melt and re cast? Maybe put back in oven and re cook them??
    Or maybe cooked too long??

    Thanks for any help

Sounds like it didn't cook long enough or at the right temp

Ok that what I was wondering about. My oven was a goodwill find, it might be on its way out. I’ll try checking the temp and see.

Do you think they could be rebaked, or would that make things worse?

Just my personal opinion but I have never been able to salvage a coating. It’s shorter on time and piece of mind for me to throw them back in the pot and start over.

Yes I would re melt them.

I had that problem when I was starting with powder coating bullets. The problem was too many bullets cooking at once with to little powder applied in too thin of a coat. It left a crispy peeling look with clear powder coat and my heart sunk, all that work wasted.

I tried to shoot some any ways and smoke and leading when fired and double coating did not fix it either this was in 9xmm and 38 special.

I found to swirl coat the pistol bullets until they were completely saturated then dump into the hardware cloth tray and place into the pre heated oven and to try to keep baking batches smaller than two hundred and fifty bullets. Verify the oven temp can be maintained with bullets in the oven this is a loaded test. I set the dial on mine to 415 to maintain an actual 400°F as verified by an inexpensive dial type oven thermometer and infrared gun type thermometer.

Until the PC cures, it's just like paint.
    Whatever!

ALCON: A digital temp probe (cheap cheap) is your absolute best friend
(that... and letting the oven equilibrate before sticking the bullets in....)

I put an oven thermometer in mine to verify temp.
