    8mm Mauser 98

    I have this k98 that has a sporter stock on it. I bought a new military stock from Numrich, and it looks great, but I had no furniture to go with it, so it languished for a while. Son Jim said he would take care of assembling it, so I left it with him, and started casting some 8mm boolits. Found a stash of 8mm cases that I had forgotten about and started to reload them, but - they're Berdan primed! Carrumba! I can't find any other stash of suitable brass, so I need to buy some. But. WHERE? Starline doesn't advertise them. Do any of you guys know of a source of 8mm Mauser brass? Please, with sugar on it!

    If you can't find any 8mm brass, you can allways make them from 30-06. I have made them in the past and it is easy.

    as Skeet1 said just run a 30-06 into your 8mm die and trim to length easy peasy.

    I just bought 50 8x57 Privi brass from Graf & Sons.
    And I formed 8 more from military 30-06 brass.

    What model and year is your receiver and does it match the stock you bought.
    The hardware is pretty much universal.
    But minor fitting will be required.

    Remove the primers the hydraulic way, tap out the dent as best as possible, and reload the primers with compound. I use roll caps.

    If your stash of berdan primed 8mm cases are good brass ones you might consider;

    Years ago I set up a drill press with a shell holder and used a regular drill bit to drill out the berdan anvil from the inside. The anvil had a slight dimple on the inside of the brass that helped guide the tip of the drill. I set the depth gauge on the drill press to just allow the bit to pierce the case. Then used a standard boxer decapping/sizing die to punch out the fired berdan primer and reloaded with LR primers. It worked for 8X57 and some 9X19 brass (SP primers). Haven't tried to duplicate the process for years but it may be worth a try.

    I've been getting 8x57 brass made by PPU from Graf & Sons. It's quality brass at a good price. When you order 8x57 brass from anywhere, make sure that there isn't an "R" in the designation. That means that it's the rimmed version of the 8x57, which is popular in Europe for use in break action rifles.

    The berdan pocket is somewhat bigger than a US primer........some have been squashing down the diameter of the base ,and sizing the pocket.........I have reloded some by drilling to CF ,and then using berdan primers with an anvil from a spent primer .......hardly worth the trouble ,unless you have some weird case that cant be formed easily .

    If I might offer a tip: take a colored sharpie and mark up the case head stamp so they cant be confused with 30-06 brass.

    30-06 to 8 x 57 conversion is very easy, just have a lot of trimming. I start on the band saw. A drill press setup with a collet holder and counter bore is what I use on my milling machine. (that's how I trim all my brass)

    I used 30-06 cases to make 8 mm brass along with other calibers.
    I used my soldering gun to put solder in the old headstamp to avoid getting them mixed up with my 06 loads.
    The solder is easy to polish down flat again ,but leave the old headstamps unreadable.

    That’s a good idea!
