Running rabbits with beagles is about as much fun as you can have.

I haven't gone rabbit hunting in years. Lots of fun.
    As always great pictures.

Hope the hounds were able to run a few during the time afield. I loved my beagles years past. Been thinking about another dog sometime and a good rabbit/blood trailing companion would be fun.
    Thanks for sharing.

Rabbit/Hare was great fun for yrs, untill the song dogs ET them up around here cottontails are fun but get some snowshoes out and running is a riot, raised Beagles from 12 yrs old until about 45, love the damn things, but heart cant take loosing anymore critters unless I can eat them.

Always liked rabbit hunting with beagles. Nothing better to hear them open up and run.

I see why you didn't kill anything. If my dogs ( when I kept some) had of hung out to get their pictures took like those dogs , I'd have shot the bunch of them. Mine were after a rabbit as soon as they hit the ground. If you think you like coon hunting wait till you hunt rabbits behind a real all business pack of dogs, you'll be ruined. First time I hunted with a fellow that had good dogs cost me $1000.00 before I left the field and another $1200.00 before I had the dogs I wanted.

For rabbits a second follow up shot is useful.

Rabbit hunting with beagles is about as much fun as you can have with clothes on! Wish I knew anyone who had them, older gentleman we used to go with stopped, and I have no idea how to teach a dog almost anything. Mine are house dogs who can't be trusted off a leash.

I use to have a hunting dog that would hunt small game and you know what one the dog was on for how it barks and acted. Fun times then . That was when I was younger then when I took up trapping then I stuck with that and hunt with out a dog. It was a mix breed dogs I mainly had . One I had that drove a grey fox at 6 months old . One great hunter. She was mixed breed. Had a beagle given to me and end up yes it was a good hunter , the problem with it was , when it had a chance it would eat the game when you wait for it to show up where the game was you shot. My dad told me when I was in the navy that he had a guy looking for another one and wonder if it was ok to give him the dog , I said yes since I know what the problem with the dog was and I was not there to take care of it. my dad told me that the guy like it .

Wolf, you are making me reminisce about my childhood. Dad always had beagles and every weekend from October 1 to mid March, except for the November deer season, we would be chasing either cottontail or Snowshoe Hares. Nothing like watching and listening to a good set of beagles .

SW Michigan 65-69 ..... Ran fox in the Paw Paw River bottoms. Would average two a day until they got thinned down again. 20-25 a winter season.

When I was small My Family ran jackrabbits with Doxie's. I know it sounds weird but it worked. All males; 2 full size and a tweenie.
The tweenie could turn inside a jack and turn it back to the hunters. Often the Jack's were bigger then he was.

Those dogs have to be very well trained to heard the rabbits back to you. Otherwise, they will just go and hide. Rabbits are one of the easiest to snare. I used to use picture hanging wire. It worked great. I always had rabbit (snowshoe hairs) whenever I felt like eating them. They were very lean. It was best to fry them with a bunch of bacon.
Commercially raised rabbit is very popular in stores here. They must have found a good race, because they are full of fat and succulent. I still like to wrap mine in some smoked bacon with a tooth pick to keep it in place.

You right , I shoot some in my yard once in a while. To have something different , I normally cut them up and coat with corn meal and bake them in the oven . Good eating and moist. I do the same with deer stakes , coat with corm meal and bake on a rack.
