    1903 Low Scope Safety

On the hunt for a low scope safety for my 1903. I am by no means an aficionado of these rifles. On the contrary - there was this walnut and blue steel "doggy in the window" on the rack at my LGS amongst all the synthetic 6.5 Creedmore rifles. Not really an impulse buy but after picking it up, feeling the action, looking through the bore for a couple of visits it came home with me. It's a sporter of course and since the receiver has already been drilled/tapped I may as well scope it. Not looking to do anything with it in particular, just enjoy.

Well, I have read enough to learn there are low-profile safeties that have been made for these. I see the Buehler brand is discontinued. Haven't found one on Gunbroker or eBay. Seems like there is more availability for Mausers. Any comments on these:

I don't really "have" to get a safety other than the factory. I can live with it as is. However I'm kinda seeing parts/interest drying up so wonder if I should lock something down.

Any related discussion is welcome. Thanks, Ed

Buehler type looks like your second link.

The type in your first link looks a lot like a type I have used on Mauser 98s, and it works from the LEFT side of the bolt, not the Right. Works fine (Mauser installs I have/have had, as you release as you wrap your thumb around the wrist of the rifle stock.
The Buehler type works from the right, Before you wrap onto the wrist.

The first type Does require fitting in my experience w/ Mauser 98 actions.
Neither I have used results in a 3 position safety. It becomes a two position safety and bolt lock.

I cannot speak on the Metalsmith safety although it looks to be a copy of the Buehler which was a very well made and nice working safety.
The Numrich , while it does work is a crude cheap imitation. Both will require fitting.

Their online catalog has never worked well for me, but Brownell's may still carry them.

Does the rifle have the original Springfield barrel? If so, they are an amazing cast bullet rifle. See if there might be a star (asterisk) stamped on the muzzle. You might have a gem there.

I'm afraid I'm not going to find a star given the fact that the rifle bears this Redfield sight and the barrel, nicely crowned, now measures 22". This Springfield is #1358xxx and dates to 1930. We have "REP 24" about 5 inches from the bolt face with an "M" and an "H" on its side.

Hdskip: yes, that looks to be the real deal.

Rich: Thank you for pointing that out. I did options but nothing that was in stock for some time - maybe a COVID thing. Now there is a "WISNER - TWO POSITION SAFETY KIT" available which is good to see.

I can attest to the Wisner two position safety as I have three on various Mausers. Jim is an excellent gunsmith and manufacturer of rifle parts. He hangs out at forums.accuratereloading.com

Thanks for all the input on the safety. Hdskip kindly sent me that safety - thank you very much sir. Problem solved.

Any input on the barrel markings?
