    Reloading Manual

I'm looking for an older manual. 60's, maybe 70's, with W230 load data

Here is a case where, perhaps, REPUTABLE on-line sources -- e.g., Wolff Publication's Load Data or Ammoguide.com -- may be worth your while looking into. You did not specify the cartridge(s) you wish to use W230 in? Both of the on-line site's mentioned have search engines where powder choice is afforded. Also -- I have a few "spare" manuals -- again, for what calibre?

I'm not sure. I load for a few. 45acp, 9mm, 45 Colt, 40s&w, 357, 44mag, 50AE, 500 s&w. Plus a dozen or so rifle rounds from 17 Rem to 50 BMG. I got a bunch of it from my grandpa's stockpile. I'm guessing I have between 25 to 30 pounds of it. I'm looking for as wide an array of data as I can get. I'm about ready to get the vise and string out and just start loading it and see what happens.

My hopes are to find 12 ga shotshell data using it. I've used other pistol powders loading shotshells.

Several W230 load data references using a google search.
Such as: WINCHESTER POWDER DATA W230
Then the real search begins. Good Luck

    I have a first edition Lyman's Shotshell Handbook (copyright 1969) and a Herter's Manual (copyright 1966) and I did a quick search - neither have a mention of W230.

I found a 1976 Winchester Western reloading "handbook" that lists W231 but it clearly shows that it is designed as a Pistol powder. I looked in the Loaddata burn rate chart and it's listed as a bit slower than Red Dot, so I imagine there's "wildcat" loads listed somewhere for shotshell; be very careful of those. Back to the 1976 Winchester Western load data. 32; 38; 357; and 45ACP and Colt are listed.
As always you could work up your own load data.

Travis I sent you a PM with a link to the old Ideal Handbook #38 that calls out 230P (Pistol) powder.

VERY unlikely to find Win 230 in a published shotshell load. In the 1980s, there was a strongly held thought process that did not believe in an overlap of loading usages. Either a Winchester powder was a shotgun powder, or it was a handgun powder, and sometimes handgun overlapped a tiny bit into the small rifle cartridges.

But it's a great medium speed handgun powder.

    good luck, garrisonjoe

    HI Travis

Winchester 230 is not a powder I'm use to using. I do collect all old paperwork.

As I can research a lot of different data. If you don't find send a PM and I'll look around.

    Is your powder W230 or W230P ?

Here is some info I found.

W230P Pistol propellant with 40 percent nitroglycerin introduced in 1960
and replaced by 230 in 1973 for handgun target loads.
231 reformulated 230 with 22.5 percent nitroglycerine and no deterrent coating so grain size and shape could be changed to minimize bridging in loading machines
Here is load data from three different years of Winchester manuals.

    November 1967 WINCHESTER
    Western BALL POWDER W230P data:
    Caliber Bullet Powder Charge Velocity
    .32 Colt Auto 71 gn. FMC 2.0 grains 230P 855 ft./sec.
    .380 ACP 95 gn. FMC 3.0 grains 230P 955 ft./sec.
    9mm Luger 115 gn. FMC 4.5 grains 230P 1140 ft./sec.
    .45 Auto 230 gn. FMC 5.1 grains 230P 850 ft./sec.

    May 1973 WINCHESTER
Western BALL POWDER LOADING DATA W230 data:
Caliber Bullet Powder Charge Velocity Pressure
    .32 Colt Auto 71 gn. FMC 2.2 grains 230 910 ft./sec. 15000 C.U.P.
    .380 ACP 95 gn. FMC 2.9 grains 230 905 ft./sec. 15000 C.U.P.
    9mm Luger 115 gn. FMC 4.5 grains 230 1060 ft./sec. 26500 C.U.P.
    .45 Auto 230 gn. FMC 4.9 grains 230 805 ft./sec. 16500 C.U.P.

    November 1976 WINCHESTER
Western BALL POWDER LOADING DATA W231 data:
Caliber Bullet Powder Charge Velocity Pressure
    .32 Colt Auto 71 gn. FMC 2.5 grains 231 865 ft./sec. 14000 C.U.P.
    .380 ACP 95 gn. FMC 3.2 grains 231 860 ft./sec. 15000 C.U.P.
    9mm Luger 115 gn. FMC 5.1 grains 231 1125 ft./sec. 30500 C.U.P.
    .45 Auto 230 gn. FMC 5.6 grains 231 795 ft./sec. 17000 C.U.P.

I have a second edition Nov. 1976 Winchester-Western Ball Powder Loading Data manual. The is no loading data for using W230 in any shotgun loads. It does list using W230 in handgun loads. The manual does say that W230 has been discontinued. Let me know if you need the data.

Use it like w231 but drop by 10% or so and work up. I still have a 3 or 4 lbs of 230/230p. If you can find one, the early Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook has a lot of data for W230 for pistol and rifle. This is a smaller plastic ring binder 239 page manual and has data for a lot of rifle and most handgun rounds.
The newer rounds you list such as 40S&W, 50AE, 17 Rem and 500S&W didn't exist when W230 was discontinued. I don't think anyone considered the 50bmg to be something in which W230 would be useful.

    44spl 3grs to 5gs for 480/775fps with 245gr cast

    45colt 4,5grs to 6.5grs for 530/850fps with 259 gr cast

the manual is about 5 1/2 in by 8 1/2 in and doesn't have a number or a printing date

    338Win 12gr to 15.5gr for 1190/1400 with 249gr cast

    300Win 14gr to 17.5gr for 1485/1685 with 180gr cast

These are a few examples of what this Lyman manual shows.

The Lyman 43rd I have revers to SP230, says it is a Winchsster Ball Powder Has loads for 38 special, but not any others. Manual is from 1973, so maybe this was the replacement powder for W230.
