Wonder if Peru would let me bring back 400 pounds of moose meat ?

Now the big Question, does it cost to apply for a tag?
I don't want to go through all that and have to pay to apply
I can see if I get drawn but just for a chance seems wrong to me but, ..

I remember when I used to apply for Arizona big game. You have to pay for the tags upfront and then get refunded when not drawn. Not a cool way to do it at all.

That is the least of your concerns. Unless you are very young, you might as well forget it. Maine uses a bonus point system, and it's a goofy one at that. To stand a chance at hunting moose you would have to be buying bonus points every year, and there is a big chance you would never draw a tag in a lifetime. For example, 90% of tags go to residents. They also recently made it so that a resident over 65 and has 30+ bonus points is guaranteed a tag. Non-residents get 8% of tags, and are not guaranteed a tag ever.

Maine is not a good state to be going for a non-resident moose tag. If you are serious about moose, the cheapest route is Alaska. Yes, I said that right. Idaho and Wyoming should be on your radar as well. Both Alaska and Idaho are true random draws, the way it should be. Unfortunately I'm not aware of any state that does draws for free. Alaska is pretty dang cheap though, I think $5. Some are outrageous, I think Idaho is $50. Considering a bull moose tag costs $2625, anyone applying for that state has little issues with money. As far as I'm concerned, Alaska is the only state that hasn't lost its mind on moose. That's the only state I will consider hunting when the time comes.

That would have to be a really fancy lodge and guide. You can hunt moose in Alaska for about $4000 today. That's tags, flights, shipping, etc. Of course that doesn't get you a fancy bed, and someone to walk you right up to an animal either. You can not hunt moose cheaper than that in the lower 48 states, IF you can even draw a tag before you are elderly. I have no idea what it would take to hunt Canada.

I'm glad we are able to buy a general Moose tag here in my province for certain areas. Other areas are on a draw basis for Elk/Moose.

For someone living in pretty good moose country, it is very apparent that their population is declining because we don't them as often as we once did. This past moose hunt had the lowest success rate since the hunt started.

Maineboy, that is very sad to hear. When my dad drew his bull permit for area 1 in 2013 we saw 40 moose in 4 days. I didn’t read the story but a lot of the problems last year was the summer like weather last fall. I had the same problem hunting deer here in October during the bow season and then saw many deer during the November-December gun season when the weather got cold. But I don’t doubt the tick problem is taking a toll on the moose population.
