Help with ohaus beam scale.

I bought a used Ohaus 500 gr capacity beam scale and I can't get it to zero. I can set it to weigh 5 gr and she will balance. Set everything on zero and she pegs out at the top. In looking at the top pan it looks too big. I weighed it on an electronic and it came in at 143 grains.

Does anyone have a Lyman 500 gr beam scale and a way to determine the weight of the pan? I think someone may have replaced the pan. I will call Lyman Monday.

I have an Ohaus 10-10. The brass pan weighs 147.3 my RCBS electronic pan is 143.2.

I read somewhere years ago they put shot inside the yoke that holds the pan to help zero. The yoke had a screw holding the plate that the pan fits into. Hope this works GW

Does the pan hanger have the little pan for the shot ballast. If so the weights can be adjusted to obtain zero and confirmed with a weight check set or compared to a known scale. Of course that's if there is no other damage. What is the model # of the scale ?

first inspect the knife edges of the beam. Are they dinged or damaged? If they are the rest of these tactics wiil not help.
If not then clean out the plastic seats where the beam rests.
The scale has to be clean
if all is ok try this

make sure table is level. And your scale is level before statrting,

I went to say you can unscrew the bottom of the pan holder and adjust weight.
I put a smaller pan and wire hanger on mine.
I put it together then used a roll of solder. Snipping it off till it balanced then put that under the pan holder.

Hope my gibberish is understandable.

I would also recommend a set of check weights to verify the scale.

For a check weight can use post '65 US dimes (clad ones). A good condition dime weighs 35.0 grains. Someone here posted that info, so now there are a few dimes with the scale.

Also, while checking, zeroing, and using the scale, make sure that it is on a solid & level surface.

I upgraded my 1010 to the new plastic Lyman pan that has the funnel built in. All you have to do is level the scale and adjust the shot in the pan holder. Now you don't need to pickup your funnel to pour into your brass. hc18flyer

I second the notion of checking the knife edges and getting some weights. If the scale does not show linear readings the knife edges are probably worn.

'Worn' or just dirty from a collection of dust & gunk over the years but I think you nailed it...it's the knife edges and their mating V-blocks.

That is because your Pan Or holder is 5 Grains Heavier. Somewhere Your pan has been replaced. There is a simple fix. Make your Pan Or pan hold 5 grains lighter . The simple way is use a fine Metal file and file the edge of your pan or any Other edge on Your holder. After every Filing Recheck your weight and you will see The weight will be Closer to zero.
I have done this several times even if You by a new pan it will need calibration

maybe bring the scale to local pharmacy and see if they will let you use a weight from their prescription balance to get a known weight. it will be in grams so you would have to convert.

I have 4 RCBS scales and they have weights under the pan. Easy to balance.-Remove the screw and weights and put to 0 and add shot until it 0's.
