Blend new curly maple into original

I am fixing a busted stock. It has curly maple and the repair looks real good to original wood. I believe the dark rings were done with the wrap rope around stock method. How would you fellas go about the staining. Stain then do the rope trick or first wrap the rope and give it some dye and water for the darker curl look? This thing is giving me a headache!

    If that is Curley Maple,
Then it was probably stained with Aqua Fortis and dried with heat to bring out the curls.
Plain Maple is done with a Rope or cotton string to apply the stain, to make it look like Curley Maple.

I just use a small artist's paint brush and hand stripe the wood.

"Fake" stripe was painted on with ink in the old days. No rope tricks....

Forget the rope idea. Get some red, brown and yellow leather dye. Mix to match the color, and then use a artist paint brush to duplicate the grain.
The solid soft lead bullet is undoubtably the best and most satisfactory expanding bullet that has ever been designed. It invariably mushrooms perfectly, and never breaks up. With the metal base that is essential for velocities of 2000 f.s. and upwards to protect the naked base, these metal-based soft lead bullets are splendid.

Forget everything you know about loading jacketed bullets. This is a whole new ball game!

I like that idea. Simple and easy.

If you do the Aqua Fortis, do not be alarmed if the wood turns green as part of the process. Just make sure to neutralize the AF after you apply heat. Use a heat gun with some real heating potential. A hair drier ain't going to get it and a hot iron from a blacksmith forge may be a Bridge-too-far.

Aqua Fortis over a cooktop eye works well. it's easy. Even I can do it.

If you got brown you're done with the AQ. You'll have to go with some dye to get anymore color.
