    500 Auto Max …. Anyone ???

A company took the 500 s and w and stuffed it into a big block AR platform , making it not a rimmed cartridge and renamed it to 500 Auto Max …. Has anyone put the round into a bolt gun yet ??? It’s crossed my mind a time or two ….

That would be one heck of a whomp in an AR, probably on both ends. I just looked it up, it's being made by Big Horn Armory who offer loaded ammo from 350 to 600 grains. It has a suggested retail of just under $2,000. Their ad describes it as "pleasant shooting".GF

Just did a 50 AE on a bolt gun. Same rim size as the 45 ACP.

That would be fun, I’m sure.
What bolt action did you use?

The .458 SOCOM is based off the .50AE. Recoil is not bad at all shooting 500 grain bullets so I don't think the 500 Auto Max would be much worse.

It was for a customer, new Savage. Recoil was a little more than I expected.

I thought the 50AE had the same rim as a 44 mag? It was introduced in the Desert Eagle to use the same bolt face as their 44 mag guns, just a different barrel.

If I'm not mistaken the .50 AE was based on a rebated rimless rifle cartridge, a .283 something if I recall. GF

The 450 Bushmaster is based on the 284 Winchester, Which has the 06 case head. I think the 475 Wildey may have been based off of the 284 also.

I found a couple of pieces of 50AE, the rim measured .508"
    44 mag measured .506"
    45acp measured .474"

I thought about a 500 Auto Max in a SS Rem M Seven. A few yrs ago someone was selling bolt actions on Gun broker in 500 Auto Max, they had huge diameter bbl's with a brake, they looked nearly same diameter as the receiver, IIRC they were Rem 700's. Seemed silly to me to have a short bbl'd rifle that probably weighed at least 11 lbs

I have a 12.7 x 42 mm in a 16" and 10" AR-5 -- basically same size but a lower operating pressure. I have been shooting the LEE 440 gr FN in it. Recoil is like a 2-3/4" 12 ga slug fired from 18" - 21" Rem 870. I think the 500 Auto Max would have pretty hefty recoil. 60,000 psi vs Mid 30,000 psi. I have a 416 wildcat base on a 300 WSM in a Rem M Seven 400 gr @ 2,150 - 2,200 fps when velocity gets over 1,800 / 1,900 fps recoil starts getting uncomfortable from a bench. It is only 6.25 lbs with scope.
